I can see in the future a word like kawaii becoming a loanword in English to mean over-the-top or frivolous cuteness, cuteness for cuteness sake. Basically I can see it representing the whole Japanese culture-of-cute, e.g. Hello Kitty and friends, maid cafes, neko-onna (girls dressed up in cat outfits), chibi (baby-faced characters), etc...
