I think we strayed from the intended topic a bit now. 
I mean, Kaito Kid is a nice topic and even more interesting how Ayumi catches him (or takes part in catching him, I guess it would take the combined effort of all 5 Detective Boys to be successful).

So... back to Ayumi x Conan.
There were some discussions already (usually in other threads) why Ayumi would be the best match for Conan and why Conan for her, so I guess a new, fresh topic would be useful.  Unfortunately... I am bad at starting discussions. So I try it with this thesis:

"Despite Ayumi showing her affections for Conan openly, especially in the beginning, he never turned her completely down like the girl who was the manager in the football/soccer club. So... why didn't he do the same with Ayumi?"

And now: Discuss. (BTW... let's stay at the character level. No "Because Gosho decided to do so!")
I want to hear some opinions before I post my own.   ;)

Well, I guess I'll continue my discussion on here then.

Conan probably didn't turn Ayumi down because he wouldn't have any explanation for doing so like he did with the soccer girl. He could tell the soccer girl "I love Ran." He can't tell Ayumi that without giving it all away. If he says "I don't love you like that" to Ayumi, she might ask "Why not? Is there somebody else?" and he would be left with the hanging question....that would tear Ayumi apart.

Because Conan is not so forward with Ayumi as to say "I don't love you." It does show that he cares to some extent how Ayumi feels and takes her feelings into consideration more than the soccer chick....or as bluekaitou said...he's afraid of Ai...

To me, that soccer chick barely knew him outside the soccer field...

Ayumi...well, she hangs out with Conan often...though she doesn't know he is Shinichi. So she considers hm a friend. Don't know if he considers the DBoys the same, but...

Furthermore, I think Ayumi and Conan have a lot in common NOW...though....yes, it may change in the future...but I highly doubt it as no one seemed to change much from their childhood that much, especially in their careers and love life according to how it was presented by Gosho.

Also, Conan understands Ayumi's emotions better than he did Ran's and better than he does Ai, as he guessed Ayumi liked him without her confession....then again, it could be because he understands the emotions of girls he doesn't really like.....or care to like....

Oh well. Any other ideas?

Although I agree with you, we have seen teen Haibara (Shiho) canon, which is much more reliable than a movie

On the other hand it is true that Haibara is somehow supporting Ayumi and her relationship to Conan, so this might be one of the reasons (at least after she joined the DB).

And Ayumi looked so cute/nice in both of them.  Much better than Haibara. But to be fair it is hard to beat Ayumi.

Actually Ran did confess. Too bad Shinichi was shrunk at that time and could not respond. Well, actually it was good, since he didn't know Ayumi at that time. Now that he knows her maybe he could rethink about his answer when he gets another chance.  Wishful thinking, I know.
But you are right as well, Ayumi had no real confession yet... Conan wasn't forced to either accept or decline her feelings for him yet.
Which is rather fortunate I guess, considering that Ayumis chances to win him over Ran are... low. Time is working in her favor, as long as Conan remains shrunken.

I am pretty sure he considers the DB as his friends. He said he would be missing them when he thought the Chinese Liquor could turn him back into Shinichi permanently. And he spends pretty much time with them, much more than what would be necessary for "camouflage".
But yeah, your ideas are good. Close to what I think. 

There is another thing you didn't mention: Shinichi loved the admiration when he was still the famous high school detective. He got love letters every day, and he enjoyed them.
Now as Conan... his main admirer is Ayumi (and the other DB). If shrinking did not change him too much he still likes to be admired.
He wouldn't reject her, especially since he knows that one of the traits she likes most is how smart Conan-kun is, something he values highly about himself.

And of course the closeness of Ayumi makes it even harder to reject her. I think Conan likes the distractions of going on "adventures" with them and the professor, even though things get a bit childish sometimes. Better than hanging around with Kogoro at least. 

Not to forget... there is also the higher degree of freedom around Ayumi. He doesn't have to hold back on his true capabilities, as long as he doesn't tell them himself that he is Shinichi, Ayumi and the Detective Boys will accept him like he is. I guess that makes him feel... comfortable around them and he doesn't want to endanger that place for himself by sending Ayumi off.


Of course there is still my hope that he (subconsciously) sees Ayumi as a possible partner for a romantic relationship in the future if it turns out that he can't become Shinichi again and that he can't force Ran to wait for him to grow up normally. I mean... it is possible, right?

I agree completely plus when she is in ova 9 that's also not canon so i didn't think canon mattered in this topic

I'm also a Shin x Ran fan, and I agree Conan and Ayumi have a few cute scenes. I think  gosho gave up on Conan Ayumi paring a long time ago about episode 100, because early on in the series we can see a lot a Conan Ayumi moments (like when she kisses Conan) but the end a little later in the series.

Will he miss the DBoys when he returns to being? He has a lot to lose once he returns to Shinichi. He doesn't have as much to lose as Conan.....

true, true. I don't think Conan would harshly reject someone who sees the good in him. He might consider it a good thing...though when people get TOO many compliments, they start to lose appreciation for them...And take it for granted. Still, Conan might find it flattering coming from Ayumi.

Though I think he really would find recognition from Ai MUCH more amazing and flattering because it's hard to get recognition from her....

yea, I really think that Conan will miss his life as Conan...he might need time to realize that. Leaving his life, he will be leaving it behind forever...which is pretty sad when I think about it.

Conan doesn't need to hide anything from the Dboys, EXCEPT him being Shinichi. He is comfortable with showing his capabilities, though he's uneasy with BO mess going around, Ran talking about him to the DBoys, and talking about certain stuff that only Shinichi would know. He doesn't have to put on airs in front of Ayumi if that's what you mean.

I think the girl he feels most comfortable with (being both Shinichi and Conan) is Ai, as he doesn't have to put on airs to impress her, or he just doesn't willingly, neither does he have to pretend to be something his not at all. Also, he is more willing to tell her things before anyone.

However, Ayumi seems to accept Conan's flaws a lot better than the other girls, and doesn't see them as flaws at all.

So, hey, to me all the girls have an equal chance.
