That's how it happens in real life. The human mind is extremely strong and if you believe you are in immediate danger, it can cause your body to have symptoms of sickness even if nothing is wrong with you. Of course it really can't cause anything that would kill you, more along the lines of panic attacks and "chained events". You think somethings wrong so your heart will speed up because you mind has told your body to release adrenaline but you think it's because of the "sickness", then that unneeded adrenaline turns into a headache and so on.
But that guy was still acting like an idiot. I guess he was stuck between "should I induce vomiting to get it out?!" and "should I just stay calm and wait for my stomach to be pumped as vomiting could only make matters worse?!".
