My thought when I saw the title of this thread,

I never quite understand chess and other similar board games(I know how to play Checkers, though. Does that count?) By the time I finish reading Hikaru no Go, I'm still confused about the rules. But I like to learn if could.

many people think that the smarter you are, the better you get at chess, but thats not true at all, chess is all about patterns, the more you play, the more you recognize/form patterns, so just ran is stupid doesn't mean that she can't win in chess.
