Spoiler: Ano Hana summary
A group of childhood friends drifts apart after one of them, Meiko "Menma" Honma, dies in an accident. Years later, the leader of the group, Jinta Yadomi, has become withdrawn and lives as a recluse. An older Meiko appears to him, and says that she must have a wish granted, though she does not know what it is.
Spoiler: Angel beats summary
It sucks being dead. Sucks even more to be trapped in a surreal afterlife where you're caught between the living and the dead—where a mysterious, violent Angel is trying to pull you over to...somewhere. What do you do? Well, if you're this group of rough-and-tumble teens, you grab every weapon you can get your hands on and give Heaven hell! High-caliber action and locked-and-loaded comedy meet on a rock and roll battleground in Angel Beats!

Haven't watched Ano Hana yet, but for Angel Beats that isn't copy/pasted from a retailer:
Spoiler: Angel Beats
Basically, it's a group of kids in the afterlife who are rebelling against a god who may or may not exist. That's mostly just the backdrop for the show, though. The true nature is in learning about the characters and their pasts. This being a Key work, they all have tragic deaths. Hell, the main character's is so tragic that he got amnesia upon dying and you gotta wait until further into the series to learn what his past is.
Also, it has a crazy guy who only speaks lines from music. One of them is from B'z in episode 2. If you grab the OVA too, it's essentially episode 4.5 if you want to watch it in order.
