The teenager laid out his clothes carefully on his bed.

He didn’t generally dress in the dark unless he had to, but he didn’t want to wake his mother tonight—particularly given what he was about to do. The headlights of a passing car briefly illuminated his unusually serious face in the mirror. He’d have to get it right tonight. If his suspicions were correct, he wouldn’t have many more chances.

He dressed mechanically, used to this after the past few nights. A few modifications, then shirt, pants, blazer. He had already filed down his fingernails and covered them with the clear polish she favored. Same with his toenails, in case anyone saw them. He didn’t anticipate taking his shoes off this evening, but there was no use taking chances.

He carefully lifted the piece of thin rubber off his desk and gently pressed it to his face. It molded itself to his features, and when the next car lit up his mirror, a different face stared back at him.

Absorbed in the ritual, he added the wig, the earrings (clip-ons), the eyelashes. He expertly applied foundation, eyeshadow, mascara, blush, lip gloss in the lightest pink he could find. He slipped his feet into the too-uncomfortable heels. He made a face into the mirror. As a rule, he had fun dressing as women, but the shoes were simply impractical, especially for someone in her line of work.

He hesitated briefly before the final touches: the gun, the badge, the ring. He had to take them, but each time the badge with her picture slipped into his pocket, or the ring slipped over his finger, he felt the admonishing whisper of her lover’s ghost. He didn’t normally hold with such superstitions, but he whispered a quick “sorryâ€
