Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare appeared (or still appears) to be heading for a massive opening weekend, potentiality the biggest of 2016 (even after considering the rest of the year's releases), but these recent earthquakes and powerful aftershocks might put a damper on its debut this weekend. We'll see. It depends on how train schedules have been affected this morning/afternoon; how much damage this morning's significant quake has caused; and how people feel about going to the cinema after/during all this.

Conan's 20th anniversary release has such strong pre-sales and morning/afternoon ticket sales, that it's guaranteed to set a franchise record and make a serious play for ¥1 billion+ this weekend. And in fact, its ticket sales so far have been almost on par with those of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Re: Detective Conan Movie 20: "The Darkest Nightmare" (2016) - Opening Weekend Forecast

Post by ssjup81 »

Well, I preordered my ticket for this evening since everything else was nearly sold out. Even the 6:30 show I'm going to was nearly sold out.

It's sad about the earthquake victims down in Kyushu. I'm sure many down there aren't thinking about movies and stuff.

Looking forward to your review.

Initial ticket sales are over twice as high as last year's movie at the same time, that's huge. However, many theaters on Kyushu Island are closed for the weekend (~8% of the nation's theaters) because of the Kumamoto Earthquake.

>Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare sets a new franchise record; a new April opening weekend in terms of admissions; becomes the 33rd film to open above ¥1 billion (pending actual); and delivered what, perhaps, could be the biggest weekend that 2016 will see if it opens on the higher-end of estimates or improves upon them.

It's hard to pin point an estimate for openings this large, but based on my estimates/comparisons, I'm projecting it opens between ¥1.05-¥1.15 billion ($9.8-10.6 million) with 850,000-925,000 admissions. But for now, I'll go with a debut on the lower-end of that range since I overestimated Yo-Kai Watch and Star Wars last December.

The Detective Conan series is an annual franchise that used to settle for consistently strong openings around ¥500 million, but it has been on the rise in recent years and began approaching blockbuster level openings by breaking its own franchise record every year since 2012. And it's done just that this year, and what better way to celebrate its 20th anniversary than with an opening this big from its 20th release, which is likely to lead to the series' first blockbuster film by grossing over ¥5 billion.

Given the actuals, you can put two of those pictures :

Detective Conan 20 OW: ¥1,209,158,900 ($11.1 million) / 933,781 admissions [348 screens]

I'm happy that I helped to contribute to that figure. I would like to see it again. I did see it Saturday, but have just been distracted by this new job. Actually, I should be working now and also have to go out. I plan on writing out some more later, though. I was just told of a task that needs to be done by 4:00 this afternoon. How bothersome.

I will say this, though for now...this movie, imo, was loads better than last year's. I also liked it better than the Raven Chaser, but I do have a question. Is this movie supposed to be canon in any way? I only wonder this because
Spoiler:
Rum died when sacrificing herself, unless she miraculously got out of the truck somehow without anyone seeing, but I seriously doubt it as the vehicle was crushed and they were taking a covered up body away and the charm she received earlier was on the body.

It's mini-canon I think. Bourbon and Kir never met in the Manga until this point. Same with Bourbon and Gin think.

>Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare, the 20th film and 20th anniversary release in the popular Detective Conan series, set the box office on fire this weekend; delivering one of the most impressive opening weekends in quite some time, and what could be the biggest opening weekend of 2016 (calendar year) not just so far, but overall. It sold an astounding 933,781 admissions over the weekend across 348 screens. Here's a list of its accomplishments this weekend:

>Fourth Biggest Opening for an Animated Film (Gross and Admissions).
>Biggest Opening Weekend for the Month of April (Admissions).
>Second Biggest Opening for the Month of April (Gross).
>33rd Film to Debut Above ¥1 billion.
>31st Film to Debut Above 800,000 Admissions; 25th to Debut Above 900,000.
>New Franchise Opening Weekend Record; Claiming it by 38%.

It achieved all of the above without playing in 3% of its actual theater count due to Saturday's earthquake
, which shut down most of southern Japan over the weekend.

The Detective Conan franchise has had over a dozen hit films in the past, and while each film over the past few years have set consecutive franchise records, none have been able to reach blockbuster status. Until now. It's quite clear that this year's release will definitely reach the ¥5 billion ($45 million) blockbuster milestone, and might even exceed ¥6 billion ($55 million+).
