Despite their large size and awkward gait, bears can run at about 30 mph. Apparently the fastest bear was clocked at 56 mph.

Roman prostitues wore blonde wigs to advertise their trade, which lead to the phrase "blondes have more fun".

I'll better put it in spoilers. Read at your own risk :P
Spoiler:

XVIII? As in the nineteenth century? Unpleasant anyhow.
Spoiler:
During the time of the black death, some people ate pus from the abscesses as a vaccine against the plague.

Count to five in five languages (note: this is something I know, not checked up on babelfish or whatever)

English:    Swedish:    German:    Finnish:    French:
one            ett              eins            yksi            un
two            tvÃ¥              zwei          kaksi          deux
three        tre              drei            kolme        trois
four          fyra              vier            nejlä          quatre
five            fem              fünf            viisi            cinq

Edit: Corrected a thing that was pointed out. And for the record I can count to five in more languages as well.

" Midsummer was thought to be a time of magic, when evil spirits were said to appear. To thwart them, Pagans often wore protective garlands of herbs and flowers. One of the most powerful of them was a plant called 'chase-devil', which is known today as St. John's Wort and still used by modern herbalists as a mood stabilizer."
