It's a story about war.  Outside of characters essential for the story, they die when defeated.  You don't come back from death.

that doesn't mean it's a good idea for gameplay

For a war simulation, yes it does.  And it's not the only series that uses it.  Pretty sure Valkyria Chronicles does too.

that doesn't change how I didn't find it to be fun though, and counter-productive for giving a challenge to veteran players or being remotely friendly to new players.

Now admittedly, this was early 2004, which was a while ago. I'd be willing to like, find the GCN one and try the series again or something I guess? Maybe? Or maybe I'll get the 3DS one if stupid companies like Capcom don't want me to buy fun games so I have to get others (this is why I'll probably get the remake of MGS3 btw).

I do that a lot, especially in FE7.

And in FE6. The random enemy cits are not fun.

I haven't played much of FE6, but from what I've seen of it, yeah.

Although it can be annoying, it's part of the reason why I like FE6, not because Lugh is my favorite character, that it's  funny to see enemies miss with a 92 displayed on the screen.
