Re: Controversial opinions
I'm not sure about that. There are plenty of things people have said that I think are entirely wrong, but I'm not all that interesting in arguing over matters of taste (e.g. kkslider's shallow and uninformed recent contribution on music and your high five of it).PhoenixTears wrote:This is a controversial opinion? My... Whatever number contribution this is: the reason this thread hasn't blown up like people predicted is because people secretly agree with everything (or almost everything) being said and just don't have the guts to say it themselves because of... Well, Jd-'s most recent contribution.

Dumbledore doesn't even have the same actorÂPhoenixTears wrote: No, Gandalf and Dumbledore do not have the same actor.
There's another side of the coin, though, to Jd-'s point.
There are those who will say racist jokes, but if someone gets offended, they will claim it's their fault for being offended. It doesn't work that way. If you want to tell racist jokes and "jokingly" dissing people's culture, fine, but don't be surprised if people get offended and realize that if they do, it's your fault.
Here's a contribution:
The Avengers is overrated. It's an enjoyable movie, but I really don't see what's so incredible about it. High budget? Check. Special effects? Check. One liners? Check. An interesting plot? Felt pretty generic. It overall felt like a generic comic book movie to me.
Just a minor disclaimer, though: I only watched the first Iron Man movie before the Avengers. I was told by friends I wouldn't need to watch all of those other films in order to enjoy the Avengers, but maybe it did hinder my overall enjoyment of the movie (or maybe it didn't. I knew the gists of the other films and the characters didn't seem more complex than "Superheroes with attitude"). Even if that's the case, I don't want to support this method of film making.
Thinking about it, though, I enjoyed X-Men III more when it came out, and I didn't even care I didn't watch the first two before it. Maybe part of that is because I watched the cartoons when I was younger.
Another contribution:
The Hobbit film was too long and was paced horribly. It was enjoyable (much more in second viewing for some reason), but Peter Jackson tried to insert the LOTR vibes into material that didn't have those vibes. I did appreciate the fact that it tried to be coherent with its theme and the Gollum scenes were the fantastic. Then, though, you have those stone giants scenes and they were necessary because...?

As for the rest of it, it was mostly a general statement, and you were hardly the intended target.

Re: Controversial opinions
I totally agree with this. I feel like certain words have only become offensive because groups of a few people have decided that they're offensive, then that vocal minority gets all pissy about people saying those words. The word only becomes offensive because the people who don't want to seem offensive stop saying it, leaving the only people left saying it being the ones who actually ARE offensive, so it gets consistently used in an offensive context. Take the word 'retard' for example. Didn't it used to be a perfectly acceptable term, at least medically?Jd- wrote: My seventeenth contribution: People are investing far too much time being offended, and the worst part is that most of the "offense" being taken in the modern world is on behalf of others. Very little of what we consider actually "offensive" is even being taken as "offensive" by the people that are being "targeted". Instead, it's the political correctness police that has made everything taboo, insinuating that even the slightest example of poorly-chosen wording is a vicious and venomous attack on even the widest group of people. There are some examples--and they are exceedingly few--of actual racism and the like in the media and whatnot, but far, far, faaaaaaaar less are actually offensive or meant to be taken that way.

Re: Controversial opinions
I made it a point to emphasize "popular". By that I basically mean "music I know exists" since unless I'm a big fan of an artist I tend to not actively seek out music. Not my fault great R&B artists are being overshadowed by Rihanna's increasingly subpar music.dilbertschalter wrote: (e.g. kkslider's shallow and uninformed recent contribution on music and your high five of it).

Re: Controversial opinions
Rihanna's time period of work was mid 2000's-now. Which mean mostly outside of the time frame you set up, and since you stressed "increasingly" that pushes her even more out of the time frame.kkslider5552000 wrote:I made it a point to emphasize "popular". Though, I pretty much follow Sturgeon's Law on the matter of genre quality.
EDIT: And while I'm here, I just want to say that Verus > Priscus and anyone who states otherwise is clearly a moron.

Re: Controversial opinions
I didn't mean to imply that, mid-2000s is just definitively when I distinctly disliked nearly every R&B song that got any real radio play, I'm undecided if the big hits from the genre were that bad before that. Ironically, Rihanna was somehow one of the only exceptions at first...though mostly for just creating really catchy pop music more than anything...let's not even get into "pop as a genre" again, that discussion is stupid.ProfParanoia wrote:Rihanna's time period of work was mid 2000's-now. Actually, new one: regardless of context, use of Sturgeon's Law is annoyingly cynical. Like one of those reviewers that hate stuff on the internet, without the humor or irony.

Continuing with the thread topic: Â I like The Black/Grey Album from Jay-Z the most, but I like the album's singles the least.
