There's no disagreement, don't worry. The Mayans never intended that "prophecy" or anything of the sort, much less total annihilation. What I was referring to was people granting any validity to this specific date or any other and why, even if they had given that date, there's no reason to believe it any more than any other day.
Akonyl wrote: I'm not sure if you're aiming that towards me or what, but aside from saying otherwise for funsies, I know that this was not supposed to be some "end of the world" and is really just the end of part of their calendar. All I'm saying is that the calculation of the end of the current b'ak'tun (the date which people erroneously attribute to being the end of the world) is still December 21st, regardless of what people say about leap years or whatever.
Nopers, was just getting in a jab on the conspiracy theorists as to why there's no reason for concern for any date that they connect to a Mayan apocalypse.

you're misinterpreting what that article says then :P

related to what I touched on (and Kyuu explained in much more detail), all this article mentions is that the calendar they found has denominations of time larger than the Baktun, and the article actually still lists December 21st 2012 as the end of the current Baktun:
The Maya recorded time in a series of cycles, including 400-year chunks called baktuns. It's these baktuns that have led to rumors of an end-of-the-world catastrophe on Dec. 21, 2012 -- on that date, a cycle of 13 baktuns will be complete. But the idea that this means the end of the world is a misconception, Stuart said. In fact, Maya experts have known for a long time that the calendar doesn't end after the 13th baktun. It simply begins a new cycle. And the calendar encompasses much larger units than the baktun.
the doomsday belief isn't based around the calendar suddenly ending (a system of writing numbers that had a definitive and concrete "largest possible number" would be weird), just that this is the end of the 13th Baktun, which as Kyuu mentioned leads crazies to believe that the end of the world will happen then. So, the article does nothing to disprove the idea that the date in question for the crazy doomsayers is still December 21st, and in fact still says that that's the correct date.

I'd want to scare all the non-believers as much as possible. Like going to Times Square and broadcasting the 'Final Hours' theme from Majora's Mask over speakers, painting up the New Years' Eve ball to look like the Moon, and having it slowly fall over the course of the day.  >:D
Knowing the truth and knowing what to do with the truth are two completely separate ideas. Learn to distinguish them. OR ELSE.

I'm not sure how this would scare non-believers. The whole "non" part kind of makes any joke about the world ending not work, since they would be non-believers of the joke :v As soon as they were scared (at least in the sense I'm getting from your post) they would no longer be non-believers :v

This is the end of the 12th Baktun and the beginning of the 13th Baktun. When the 12th Baktun started absolutely NOTHING of substance happened. Nothing changed, nothing happened. It was basically a plain and ordinary day.

Here is a lovely video about it!

this is like saying the 1st century AD started in the year 101, when it really started in the year 1. When we switch from 12.x.x.x.x to 13.0.0.0.0, we're not going from the 12th Baktun to the 13th, we're going from the 13th to the 14th. When this current creation was 1 day old, the date was just 1, or 0.0.0.0.1 (if you extend it to the baktun). This was in the first Baktun, unless there's some reason to believe the Maya 0-indexed their numbers.

besides, if this was the beginning of the 13th Baktun, then according to your previous post, we would have nothing to worry about, because the last creation "lasted 13 Baktun" while this would only be us entering the 13th Baktun.

Oh hey, and if everyone wants to take a gander at all the lovely apocalypse theories from days long past.

Have fun! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_da ... tic_events

There are only two on that list that I consider legitimate.

those are way out of our lifetimes though, so no reason to worry :P

biggest thing to worry about imo will be the 32bit signed unix timestamp rollover in ~25 years, which while it's a bit metaphorical in the "apocalyptic" sense, will still be a pretty big deal (unlike y2k, which was blown out of proportion because programs don't generally work off of calendar dates).

unless of course, all those things are redone by then to use 64bit timestamps, but companies love to keep around old software for as long as possible :V
