The names seem to come from all over the place in Amestris XD Also, try listening to the names Hohenheim lists off when he's calling for people in Xerxes or talking to the souls in his body. There's a real mishmash of cultures in the names.

that's pretty much what I was told when I asked if I should watch the original or Brotherhood first, I decided I'd rather go "AWWW YEEAAAAH" and not watch the first :P

Yeah, I read the manga first, then spent a lot of the first anime "WTF"ing. There were some interesting concepts, like the creation of the Homunculi, and Sloth, Lust and Wrath were all interesting characters, but I always end up watching the ending and the movie going "What."

I went to myanimelist and found the movie, and upon reading the first sentence of the synopsis I was like "wait, the first series ended how?"

I got confused the first time I saw the movie because I hadn't realized there was a first anime, so I spent the movie going "Why's he in Germany? What happened to his arm? Why's Al a kid? Wait, that kid's Wrath?" etc. I watched in anyway because I'm a history geek and my SG history was obsessed with Weimar Germany so, dammit, the information might as well be of use once in my life, but I ended up looking it up afterwards and being freaked out by the end of the anime.

I like the manga ending better. More resolution. Also, the first anime shows me why people ship Elricest, and even though I would happily ship the Hitachiin twins to the end of the earth, I find Elricest deeply creepy. I love their close brotherly relationship in the manga and Brotherhood, so I just find it creepy when people interpret it as "they want to bone each other" and not just "they're brothers, they care about each other, they're the most important people in the world to each other because they're the only family the other has and they've been through so much together".

Roughly my reaction throughout the final part of the last fight, from one of the Briggs badasses just shooting Father in the head onwards :P Also my reaction whenever Olivier Mira Armstrong is doing anything awesome, which is more or less any time she's onscreen  8-)

That was my reaction everytime I listened to the first ending.  As stupid as it seems, one of the best ways to get me hooked onto a series is a stellar OP/ED combo

yeah I sometimes think having a good, catchy, memorable opening song is the most important part of an animated show succeeding (this is the only reasons cartoons in the 80s existed)

The OP/EDs all have me hooked, but I also found the first ending utterly adorable <3

True dat homes. True dat.  That first ending is legit as hell.  I really like the OP5/ED5 combo, shits epic and emo to the max (in a good way)

I think even if the first one is kind of....strange I still think it's worth watching. But, if someone wants to start FMA I would advise him to watch the first anime and then the second, cause since I've watched the second I cannot get myself to watch the first one completely.

IMO Brotherhood is way better than the first anime, so it probably is better to watch the first anime first. That way, both seem awesome in their time, while it's hard to really appreciate the first anime at all compared to Brotherhood.
