Newcomer to forum, old timer to Conan.

Post by Xtian »

Hello all.

been reading a bunch of stuff on this forum and well, seems like you folks know how to have fun haha.

Just saying hi as a new registeree, and hopefully a translator to help out DCTP. Now with the Thanksgiving holidays, thought I'd post a self intro as I'm bored and tired of watching too much Conan episodes today.  If you have nothing better to do then read on about my adventure while watching Conan... -_- (or something) otherwise, move on and, nice to meet you =)
Spoiler:
I started watching Conan when it first started being aired on TV (used to go to a Japanese Video Store in Costa Mesa, CA to rent VHS tapes!!) while learning Japanese at UC Irvine.  WAY too many years later I stopped watching somewhere around episode 500+ but I decided to start watching again a couple of months ago.  Of course, inevitably, I ran into DCTP and downloading started.

I realized why I had stopped watching when I hit episode 553, it was because Akira Kamiya was let go as the voice actor of Kogorou Mouri and I couldn't stand the replacement (they could have at least gotten a similar voice actor like they did for Lupin the 3rd's voice actor when the original passed away, you really can't tell the difference at all which is quite impressive)

I'm quite fluent now in Japanese as I took 3 years in college and had experience working for Japanese companies here in the US.  Oddly I might have been one of the first to put translations online back in 1993 when I translated "H2" by Adachi Mitsuru (it was only weekly "text" translations without scans, you had to have the manga in hand to see the pictures, haha those were the days).  I also worked on way too many chapters for "Hajime no Ippo" with ... forgot his name, cooldog? snoopdog? something dog ... I think.

The only "anime" translation that I worked on was "Emma" about 5-6 years ago starting with episode 3, I loved that show and when I saw the (mis)translations for the first 2 episodes I knew I had to help.

So, because I love Conan so much, I thought I'd help the DCTP now.

My favorite episodes are the "Satou and Takagi" episodes, and "Shiratori and what's her name" episodes actually anything with some romance, as I'm a sucker for romantic comedy.

Also a shout out to the old school Anime Expo Staff members if there are any out here. I'm a 1994-1998 AX Staffer from the Cal-Animage Epsilon chapter in Irvine, woot!

Well, I work full-time and am a Graduate student, so not TOO much time to spare, I've been to enough anime/translation forums to know that translators are always scarse, but I'm picky.  If I ever get to see Kintaichi and enjoy it, maybe... because mystery/detective anime are hard to translate because you have to be pretty accurate about word usage for future storyline connections etc.

Hi Xtian, welcome!  Are you still studying at Irvine?  Got a couple of peeps that go there currently, welcome aboard :)  And yeah, new voice actors tend to be pretty hard to adjust to - but after watching 20 or so episodes you just get used to it.
