2, one to be the penultimate bad guy who's the villain's right-hand man, and one to be the one who gets his teeth kicked in by the main character all the time, possibly for comic relief.

a third could be more middle-of-the-road, but not really necessary imo. Anything past that and they just turn into henchmen, not sidekicks.

4. Though I'd say it depends on the scope of whatever-we're-talking-about.

8. Villain sidekicks are incompetent (mostly), so they need as many as they can get.

And I agree with Meme re: poll 666.

Nothing, since villain sidekicks are annoying, IMO.

However many suit the bad guy, I guess, and however long the franchise is going that the hero needs to keep beating buildup bad guys.
