X-Men proved that prequels are bad.

Disney proved that sequels are bad.

Almost any movie that got a reboot proved that rebooting is bad.

Can't decide which to choose  :-X

Bourne proved that sequels get better UNTIL they started to reboot it.
Batman and Bond proved that reboots are good.
Superman proved that Kryptonite sucks no matter what.

Unplanned sequels that suddenly have to happen solely because they can squeeze more cash from the franchise.

Having someone other than then original creator (the one that made it popular) continue it, in any way.
There are still exceptions to that rule - especially if the one(s) continuing it worked together with the original creator on it - but it's still quite common. What exactly they produce, sequel, prequel, reboot or something else, isn't really that important.
