If it's not as good as LotR, I'll be horribly disappointed. I don't know why it's split into three movies, though.  Other than the money factor.

first option. Leaning a bit towards 3, because I'm wary of it being split into three movies due to the source material's length, but at the same time they should probably be able to put more interesting things into the movies because people won't be as angry about The Hobbit deviating from source material as they were for LotR.

I'm hoping it'll be as good at least.

Yup. My guess is that it's pumped with actionscenes to make it into three movies, or it's filled with stuff from other books as well. Well I'm going to find out next saturday.

There is a long while in The Hobbit where Gandalf wanders off to do his own thing and then returns ages later. It sounds like he's been doing some really awesome stuff, but none of it's ever described or explained in detail. So if the extended length of The Hobbit includes sequences of Gandalf performing badassery.... I am completely and totally fine with this.

I'm okay with that as well. As long as they don't throw in a bunch of useless fluff, I'm good.

#1 and a bit of #2.

The reason for the length - and the reason I'm a bit on the side of #2 - is that they are planning on filming some of the appendixes of LotR (as the third movie, IIRC). That has to be awesome! :D
