I got  a funny thought, but first a question. Is your ipod an unrecognized device on a different computer. If so, I sorry to say that your Ipod might be dead. That error is common with USB devices that no longer work.

I had this problem a long time ago, and my iTunes wouldn't recognize my iTouch. I had to update or re-install iTunes (it was so long ago I don't remember which one I did :P). I knew it wasn't my USB because I have a wall charger and it still charged.

I tried it at school once and it worked. However, it stopped working after I brought it home and reinstalled iTunes. It said that it wasn't compatible because I have the latest version at home. This is weird considering my computer should not be linking my iPod to iTunes if it's saying that the iPod is a unreognized device.

Scan your computer for viruses. Uninstall the driver for your iPod. Uninstall and reinstall iTunes. Try again.

If all that fails, contact Apple support. If they don't help check on rockbox.org to see if you device is supported. if yes, install rockbox and use that firmware instead, effectively ditching iTunes.

If all else fails, give Apple the finger and get a cheap, but good Sansa device.

Another thought. Are you saying that AFTER you updated Itunes  , it stopped? Do you remember which version you were running when it worked last?

I'm not really sure what you mean by stopped but It still does not work. I believe it was vesion 10.3.6 when it worked fine. Then I updated it to 10.6.(I think) and now  10.6.1.7.

Can you downgrade it back to 10.3? Sometimes updates can crash and will not work until a patch is out. Also it is normally best if you can, to wait to upgrade until you know for sure that the version you are upgrading is stable and works with your hardware.

If you do decide to downgrade. backup all the stuff you can not live with out , uninstall the nonworking version, then install the stable version

It seems like I can still download version 10.3. I haven't really downloaded anything since version 10.3 so it should be fine if if I don't do anything, right?

But it still gonna be troublesome for me to add new songs onto my iPod. Oh well, I'll get what I can take.

I didn't want to double post but I've encountered another problem. I downloaded version 10.3 but my computer says that since I already have a newer version installed, the library won't open. I tried uninstalling the new version and it still did not work.

Question 1) is your computer Windows or other? If other what?
Question 2) If windows Xp, Vista, 7?

You should not be trying to uninstall the new itunes. You are either trying to updates or upgrade itunes. If you can not do that then you need  to uninstall itunes any and all versions.
You might need to do that manually and that is why I need to know what your os is?
this link is a google of manual uninstall itunes but seems to mostly be for XP windows

It's Windows 7.

iTunes just prompted me yesterday for download of a newer versoin of iTunes. I installed that and it still does not work. I don't think iTUnes is the issue but rather the iPod itself. I have had this problem in the past but it only required switching the USB charger to another slot. I've tried that too but the computer just refuses to recognize the iPod saying that because it has malfunctioned, it does recognize it.

Nope. Just the charger connected directly to the USB slot.
