...

For the love of God, Mr. Smith, leave the Internet alone  :|

Yeah, Child Pornography is horrendous, but it's been dealt with in quite a few manners before.

How old is this Lamar Smith anyway? He probably doesn't understand the Internet at all. I can see how he could have good intentions like "Oh, doi, that Child Pornography stuff is horrible! I should do something to stop it!" but I can also see him trying to do a Google search and have it take him 5 minutes because he can't type  :|
That would imply that stopping child porn was ever the point of this bill.

There's not.  They're just trying to pull a "THINK OF THE CHILDREN" card and hoping it works.

That was my initial thought but it was so sleazy I wanted to hope it wasn't the case.

But of course, it's politics. Wouldn't be right without sleaziness *sighs*

The MPAA outright admitted to bribing and otherwise extorting Senators for votes on SOPA.  I think the whole "sleaze" possibility went out the window a long time ago.  They aren't even concerned about being tried for criminal activities for this.

There is no expression or picture or emoticon or anything to truly express my reaction to that.

Just...the hell. This is like what you see in cartoons with the card carrying villains. ...Except it's real.

Reading through Lamar's biography...

Besides the aforementioned internet bullcookies...
He supports legislation to prohibit federally funded abortions. Lamar Smith voted in favor of the amendment to prevent funds from going to planned parenthood. He also voted no on expanding research to more embryonic stem cell lines which were leftovers of in-vitro fertilization, going to be destroyed anyway, and had the informed consent of the donor they were going to be used for stem cell research.
Smith was introducing a bill that "would expand the DMCA's restrictions on software that can bypass copy protections and grant federal police more wiretapping and enforcement powers."
He disabled future commenting on his facebook page after a bunch of people flooded his page with protest comments. (Too cowardly to take the heat.)
He is also a "Christian Scientist" which is the sect of Christianity who thinks diseases can and should be healed through faith and prayers preferentially rather than traditional medicine and doctors. I don't know if he practices or encourages it, but I know multiple cases of children who died after their parents refused to take them to professionals.

If you are Texan, please vote him out.

The MPAA and the RIAA are horrible, and it is not just their political lobbying. They are utterly corrupt in their own business.

It is my personal moral crusade to avoid engaging in any activity that financially supports either industry, or gives them numbers they could use to promote their activities. I don't even pirate their crap in case they use the statistics to show their own popularity. I only watch movies other people own, or listen to songs other people own, listen to music on free media where my participation can't be tracked, buy indie, or support bands indirectly by buying their branded goods after verifying money actually goes back to them rather than the record labels.

And do we see this on the news? No.

Man, my opinion of Congress is getting worse and worse. I can't wait until the new Congress is in session.
Why? You never win the cursed war.
