Creative people more likely to cheat, finds study

Creative People More Likely to Cheat: Study (CBS News)

Why Creative Types May Be More Likely to Cheat (TIME)

Some of you may have seen this already, but I figured I would make a simple and direct poll of it. The study was published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology last month, and the findings are... interesting! Or, are they? There's another angle to this that I'll acknowledge later that I find quite intriguing as well.

So, what be it? Creative people = natural swindlers!?

I wouldn't doubt it, however I feel like it's less a case of "creative people are swindlers" and more a case of "swindlers are creative". The distinction might not be all that huge, but dishonesty, lies, and the art of deception are all things which require at least some degree of creativity, so a liar who always has his lies found out is much more likely to stop lying than a liar who can come to weave convincing enough lies to successfully deceive.

But basically, the articles make it sound like creativity breeds dishonesty, while I think it's probably more a case of dishonesty breeding creativity.

When I read the thread, I thought it meant cheating on their partners!

^thought that too :x

Somehow, that test suggests that non-creative people wouldn't cheat. But I think it's more that the non-creative people would cheat as much as creative people, just that creative people can do it better and thus more often because they are creative D:
If someone would think his cheating will probably fail (due to non-creativeness etc.), he won't do it. Doesn't mean he wouldn't do it if he could XD

Not more likely to cheat, just more likely to get away with it.

It almost seems like it's more "Creative people need more money" since they were almost paid to cheat.

I don't know...the test just doesn't seem right to me. It really seems more based around "Who will cheat for money" than "Who will cheat"  :-\

This.  Creative solutions to simple problems.  The simple is known, and thus easily caught.  The creative is distinct, and hard to prepare for.

Case in point: one of my college teachers forbid flip-flops or any other slip on shoe during tests because she's had students write answers on them before, slip them off during the test, read them, and them slip them back on.  Creative.

Yes. A lot of the time when the person is creative they tend to focus on that rather than their studies and flunk everything so... XD

Granted I like to think a lot of the people here are creative, but I doubt very many of them have cheated. There will be some who did but that's given.

What it's actually saying is "who will cheat when there's an incentive involved", which is the entire point in cheating to begin with. It's not just money--it's anything that could benefit them. If you take money out of that test and let it instead be in a group of students doing the same for a major exam, the results would be virtually identical I bet.

I guess that makes sense

I dunno, maybe I'm just too much of a goody-two-shoes to see any real reason to cheat ever xD'

I'm the same way. =w=

But others don't see it that way, sadly...

I dunno, after Naruto and the Chunin written exam, putting information in your shoes just seems uncreative and lazy. :V

I am bothered by the fact the title is not "study finds" but instead "finds study"

I don't think it has to do with creativity or not...more so, for example in the case of a school exam, whether the person studied or not :P
