It's a waste of time (especially during exam period) but I like reading them anyway (the good ones only).

Tried writing long time ago but that was horrible mostly because I never had the interest.

I usually don't read them, but I don't have anything against them either. None of the vote options reflect this. To me they are just another form of fanwork, like fanart, that takes a lot of time to look at. I don't read them for DC, but I did so occasionally for the HP fandom when someone specifically recommended one as being worth my time for it's humor, character interpretation value, etc.

i voted all bad, but i wouldn't say i'm hostile to them- the problem is that the majority of them aren't that great. there are some that seem quite interesting, but there is an opportunity cost that comes with getting into the scene that i'm not going to pay yet.

i wrote a couple chapters of one when i was 13 (it was terrible).

that being said, i have probably spent more time in my life than anything else (except sleeping+school) either replaying or coming up with new interpretations of things i have watched or read and playing them out in my head, so i can certainly see why people find it so appealing.

Man will go down into the pit, and all his thoughts will perish. The uneasy consciousness, which in this obscure corner has for a brief space broken the contented silence of the universe, will be at rest. Matter will know itself no longer. 'Imperishable monuments' and 'immortal deeds,' death itself, and love stronger than death, will be as though they had never been."

I don't have a problem with them, but I don't read or write them.

I'm not a fan, not because there's anything wrong with them but because I tend to not pay attention to "non-canon" stuff anyway. Non-canon being in quotes there because I don't mean it in the strictest sense, but that I tend to stay in the main body of work. Like, I'll watch a Conan movie/AO even though it's "non-canon", but I won't go out of my way to read the DC handbook or whatever.

I think the only fanfic I seriously read was ages ago, starring Kefka from FF6.

You can see that you're leaning on the negative side through the poll options :P XD

I have the same as Chek.
I usually don't read them but don't have anything against them. Sometimes I happen to read one.
I usually tend to look for fanart or fanfics as comics :V

Judging me by the options in the polls isn't such a good idea, since I mostly try to give the option for anyone to vote, especially in polls like these where the opinion is very specific. Most of the negative options in this poll are actually derived from stuff that people like Parkur said in the past. My very specific opinion about fanfics isn't even in this poll because if I did put it, I'd probably be the only one to vote for it anyway.

Still didn't finish my essay, though, so my thoughts will come later...

Hmm... not voting 'cause none of the options really sum it up for me. I mean, there are really good fanfictions (Oh God Not Again from HP fandom and Three Thieves from DC as examples), but then you come across ones like My Immortal and... basically, the majority are terrible; OOCness, spelling/grammar mistakes and so on just ruin it, however, I still think it's worth going through all those horrible ones because the best ones more than make up for it (and occasionally seem better than the original series :-X). My opinion on writing them though, I've not really written many fanfics myself and those that I have are incredibly short/unfinished and they all need redoing, I always get distracted when trying to write them :-X, so anyone who does complete one... *gives them all cookies*

In the words of TVTropes: the remaining 10% is worth dying for.

My main problem with the large majority of fanfics out there is language. For me, bad grammar/spelling/syntax etc. can really ruin a story - I've lost count of the number of fics that I stopped reading halfway through because of such problems, even though the plotline actually was pretty good. OOCness bothers me as well, but to a smaller extent, just as long as it doesn't go overboard.

Unfortunately, though I really like doing it, I'm just not much good at fic writing. The stuff in my head doesn't come out right when I actually try to write it down :(

Same. The problem with fanfic is that the 90% isn't filtered out. And some  of the 90% really is atrocious. *coughMyImmortalcough*

Hmm... read that a while ago, however the crackiness is nowhere near as good as in All The Dementors of Azkaban ;)

I love reading and writing them, but there are a few things that have to be met so I enjoy reading them.

Proper grammar and spelling
Plot that makes sense and doesn't drag on forever
Something that is not discontinued.
