It depends on the plot. For more romantic scenes, I use female more often. For action, I use male. I dunno why though.

I write stories with both females and males. Though, I would say that writing with females is more interesting.

why make the main character have a girlfriend? If he had one, he wouldn't be able to get with all the others.

well yeah, but if you're going for a sympathetic character, you generally try to avoid giving them too many douchey traits
