I'm flattered ranger, but if the idea doesn't come from you it won't mean as much to me. :(

Haha one thing to contribute to the list, and something that I'm sure many will agree with.

Spend time with the significant other. You can do sweet thing, but it means nothing really if you aren't spending much time with the person. At least I think so. Gifts aren't the only thing that is sweet. Just showing that you are there for the person is enough =D

just my two cents

I think a sweet thing to do would be if while your significant other is the only one who's currently employed and you do things around the house to make things easier for them. For example: cleaning and putting away their work cloths; packing their lunch; making a place on the couch for them to relax when they get home from work; brewing a fresh pot of coffee for them so they can have a cup when they get up; listening to them rant about their day at work while actually engaging in a conversation with them about whatever it is they are ranting about and being understanding when they're too tired to go out and do anything.

This. This. This. This. This.

I really cannot agree with this enough.

For me, I don't care about gifts at all. I'd rather just spend time with that person. I mean, even if we're just sitting around staring at the wall or something... as long as we're together. XD

It all depends on how they like attention.

Have you ever heard of the "Five Love Languages"? I heard it from a friend a couple of years ago- although it may be common sense if you look at it from a certain angle! XD

Some people like their attention through words (just compliments and words of appreciation), others quality time (as others said, spending time with them), others gifts (like little love notes or something to the color of that), others through favors (like laundry), and others through physical touch (like hugs and pats on the shoulder and holding hands).

It's probably best to just try out everything to see what seems to touch them the most. :)

And the big thing- listen.

I agree. Although as IHKF said all of those things combined would be things that you should try with your significant other to see how they react. Even if it doesn't touch them much, the fact that you did that is great. But some depend on how close you are to the person physically. Long distance relationships are mainly time and words, although gifts could be sent through the mail or something.
