book 2 is by far the worst. the best by far is 3, in so many ways (the non-appearance of voldemort being a highlight of sorts). the order is roughly 3->5->1->6->4->7->2. book 4 is quite good, but crouch's/voldy's plan is an xanatos roulette of insane proportions. of the movies, i've seen 1, 2, 3, and 5, enjoyed them, but don't prefer one over the overs.

Man will go down into the pit, and all his thoughts will perish. The uneasy consciousness, which in this obscure corner has for a brief space broken the contented silence of the universe, will be at rest. Matter will know itself no longer. 'Imperishable monuments' and 'immortal deeds,' death itself, and love stronger than death, will be as though they had never been."

Book 7 turned out to be just about everything I didn't want, so that was a disappointment. :-\

Book 1 was good, but they got better from there. 2 was actually the first of the series that I read, and there are parts of it I still love. 3 is my absolute favorite (Hate the movie version. Haaaaaaaate), because it was just that awesome. 5 is slightly better than 4 only because I enjoyed the plot a little more (though I think 4 is second after 5 on the movie list for me; they actually did surprisingly well with that on). 6 was good, but it was wasn't memorable enough for me.

The first book is hard to judge. The plot is quite shallow and a lot of pages are taken up by not especially exciting exposition, but the nostalgia factor is too high for me not to like it. I remember how blown away I was when I read it- the world created was so magical and so real at the same time (being 8 at the time obviously helped). Even today, I still feel a very strong connection to the series, helped by the fact I was born in 1991, which was the year when the series "started" (referring to the internal series chronology there) and which meant that I was very close in age to the protagonists when the last book was published.
