I find it unfortunate the writers only thought of raising the stakes around episode 9. While focusing on the family matters of different characters was okay, the lack of focus on the villains (who I'm pretty sure are supposed to represent the main conflict of this season... whatever this conflict is supposed to be) wasn't balanced well and hindered the season. While obviously this season has some themes it goes with, I have no clue what exactly was meant to be the main theme and big arc.
Okay episode overall, but it loses points on the fact that Obnoxious-Kid-Kai is still alive.
Also I kinda wonder if there will be an actual "change" this season (to justify the title). Besides the Airbenders (which is a very superficial change) nothing has really changed as of yet.

We don't know a thing about why they want to kidnap the Avatar or what they hope to achieve by it, or why they want to kill world leaders. Is P'Li related to Combustion Man and wants revenge for her grandfather's death or something? How can Gazan control lava? Why doesn't Ming-hua have arms? What is Zaheer's DEAL? Avatar villains have always been pretty clearly fleshed-out in their motivations--you had a pretty good idea of where Zuko, Azula, Zhao and Ozai were coming from from the get-go, but there was still a lot to be revealed in how they became the people that they were and how they developed as people. These guys it's still very... why?
I assume the change refers to the change in the world caused by the connection to the spirit world (which I feel like they could be doing more with) and the new airbenders.
