Then I wonder, why does it always have to be that one personality is good and the other one is evil. Well, if both were good and both were evil, then you don't really have a great conflict and it can serve more as a comic relief (especially if the two personalities are evil  >:D)

Hmmm... I think the most interesting thing plot-wise would be the evil personality being aware of the good one, but not the other way around. Then the evil one could do all sorts of evil things and know that the good one will have to face the repercussions of the actions, and the good one won't know anything of what's going on until he's confronted with it. >:D (But then, ultimately, it would have to be a "good triumphs over evil" situation, of course. Because that's the way it works.)

It's possible I'm putting too much thought into this.

(I should say though, Ako-chan [the "good" personality, if his Hero status is anything to go by] and I [the "evil" personality because of my Villain status] are very much aware of each other. )

Depends heavily on the situation around it. As a main character, it would make sense for them to be aware, because then there's the whole inner struggle thing to deal with, but as a secondary character, having them not aware could also work (depending on the situation). Though generally, if one is the lesser-used one, they should be aware, or else they'll just wonder why they sleep 20 hours a day.

I went for both, but it really depends on what kind of story you're doing it in. IRL, it varies from person to person on how aware they are of their split personalities. Sometimes the personalities share memories, sometimes there are blanks. It is important to remember that this is still one person, so the personalities are rarely 100% separated IRL. If you're not handling it realisically, though, especially in universes heavy on the magic, you can make either personality as unaware, autonomous and batshit as you like XD

Any of the options have their degree of interesting depending upon the particular situation.  I chose the option that says both personalities are aware of one another.

Can't the personalities be unconsciously aware of the other side (which allows them to switch amongst themselves)?

Also, the personalities don't have to be evil; they can always have a conflict within themselves, and that leads him/her to look for something (e.g. find ways to alleviate loneliness, protect the self, etc.)

Split personalities IRL aren't always or even often a "good" or "evil" personality. One personality might be distinctly more exuberant or antisocial or cruel or whatever, but cases of someone flipping between angelic and sociopathic are hardly common.
