Americans, help me understand...

Postby Kor » September 5th, 2010, 7:01 am

First of all, I'd really like to know why is this:
as far as I understood, getting high education in a country like germany is pretty cheap. University in germany - 640$ (the fees I'll be paying to finish my german learning classes would be more expensive than that.......)
Compared to learning in a college like Berklee in Boston - 30,000$

Why is high education in the USA is so expensive?
I'd be lying if I said that the high education in Israel isn't expensive as well (5300$), but still it comes nowhere near the US.
Or can it be that I'm not understanding correctly, and the 30k is for a full program?

I don't get it either. I mean, I don't have to deal with it because tuition's free in Scotland, so I only have to pay for books and food and stuff, but in Englad costs are a bit high too. Not enough socialism in the society? XD

Aren't US Governments being very supportive with their education policy ?

I heard there were many school and college being subsidized, some even free of charge

If there are, my cousins haven't gotten near any of them... they're racking up student debt like nobody's business.

as far as I know, most american students take loans from the bank which they need to pay back for like 20 years. One of my teachers who learned in Berklee is still paying back for the his education there.

In America, the tuition money does not go toward the professors.

It goes toward the athletic programs.

So It's basically the same with my country then, the cost for educations here is very expensive.

For example; I estimated for High School level of education, it cost roughly 650$ to enter and 35- 165$ of monthly fees..

Compared with our average national salary of 150 - 300$ / month.. Education alone already cost roughly half of our monthly incomes..

Bingo.

Oh, and it goes to the greedy schools.

This is America, though. The fact that textbooks here are over $150 while they're like 75% less in other countries should be a good enough clue as to why American colleges are so expensive. And for what? The same education that you could get anywhere else, to be honest. I go to a community college and I can guarantee you I'm getting a better education there than I would if I went to a state college around here. At the very least, my Professor's aren't pompous asshats who think they're God's gift to what they teach, because in the long run people really care that you're spending a few hours a day telling people what happens in photosynthesis.

^That.  Community College is much cheaper.  The only issue is if, for whatever reason, your credits don't transfer to a University.

It depends on what college you decide to transfer to. For example, certain state colleges around where I live do accept my Community College credits. Of course, thanks to many unforeseen circumstances, I most likely will not be transferring to one of those colleges, but that's what happens in the real world, unfortunately.

Indeed.  But I'll still take the cheaper education as far as I can.

Other countries, such as European countries, subsidize higher institutes of learning.  America however, does not.  Therefore the students have to pay for the entirety of it with no assistance from the government outside of some piddly scholarships which may account for 2% of the semester's tuition.

Also, anyone who goes to a 4-year University before doing Community College isn't being given the proper guidance by someone.  That or they just want to get the hell out of their parents' house.

Do you mean specifically people who go to a 4-year, and then go to a CC, or do you mean anyone at all who doesn't go to a CC first isn't being given proper guidance? Because around here, hardly anyone that goes to CC ends up going to a 4-year.

My mom told me that it's because colleges and universities in America often recieve no state funding; they're entirely privatized institutions. State colleges sometimes get funding, so they can be a little cheaper if you're from in-state, but they still cost. Whereas higher education in other countries is often heavily subsidized.

Well then, all of what I can do is to practice really hard now so I'll get the full scholarship from Berklee. Fortunately, they don't have many flute players, so that gives me already more chances than others. Someone who used to teach there also said he will say a good word on me to some people.

I wouldn't mind to finish learning german and go learning there (I was born in germany and have a nationality), but the problem is that I want to make a career out of preforming, and the only way to do that is to have connections, and Berklee is a good place for that. (In my country, it's close to impossible to make a career in preforming.....).
If I won't get the scholarship, then I truly will go study in Germany (with not intention of coming back to Israel, that is)
