The Weekly Nerdy Thread (This week: Poetry)

So the Weekly Nerdy Thread has started! For the starting week: Poetry. Oh, yes. This is getting nerdy.

Personally, my favourite has to be Whitman. He has a great pace, and I think the fact that he usually doesn't limit himself by rhyme allows him to express more feeling. My favourite poem by him is Song of Myself. I know a lot of people say O Captain! My Captain!, but I just find SOM more... profound.

Instead of flooding you with peoms analysis, I'm gonna leave it there. I think this could be a great place for people to post their favourite authors/poems so we can all improve our poetic vocabulary. Let the nerdiness begin!

My absolute favorite poet is Edgar Allen Poe. I love his writing style and the dark theme in all of his stuff. So awesome.

My favorite of his writings is most definitely The Raven. Classic.

first off when i think of poetry, i think of the book Where the Sidewalk ends or A Light in The Attic by Shel Silverstein
i used to read these books all the time when i was younger, i loved all the poems he wrote!! there were way to many good ones to even make a list


also i love the poem Casey at the Bat by Ernest Thayer.

Ahh Poe. What a unique guy. Many people like his short stories, but I'd stay with his poetry. You're totally right about him; he really did manage an atmosphere that I haven't seen in many other places. I'm gonna go re-read that.

There are so many poems I love, I need to go through my books on them again, I'm quite excited, and I love Poe so much. But right now I can't think of like anything off hand, maybe cause its 2 am. And maybe I'll even post some of my own poetry songs in here, if anyone wants. ^^

Also, I studied WWII poetry this year in English class.
Anyone else enjoy annotating poetry, and discussing what each stanza (symbols) mean?

I never had any formal training in Poetry, for which everyone here's gonna bash me... I still like reading it, and I still think I get most of it, even if I probably don't understand the techniques and stuff as well as you guys. But, yeah; that's no excuse

Poetry is a really hard thing to understand though.
There are way too many techniques to remember, unless you write poetry or teach it for a living.

I love Shel Silverstein too! I miss reading his stuff. I think I should probably go buy some of the books next time I'm at the bookstore... I still remember most of the poems.

Exactly! I love the way he uses the syllables and beats (I'm sure there's a better word for it than that, but that's the only one I can think of right now) in his lines and stanzas to create an even more haunting atmosphere than just the words alone can.

I also like Annabel Lee. I like his short stories too, but not as much. If I had to choose one it would be The Masque of the Red Death.

@Sebs: Nobody's going to bash you for not having any formal poetry training. I don't always know what I'm talking about either. The last time I was any sort of poetry class was during sophomore English. Which was 2005. So I don't remember a lot of it.

I guess that's true. But I really don't mind not knowing all that, as long as I can enjoy poetry. I think that, in the end, that's all that matters

Yes I agree. And I've read poetry where I go "What the hell is this talking about?" and I find it... boring. So I usually only enjoy it when I understand it.

Depressing though it is, i'm really taken by some of the imagery in Sylvia Plath's poetry. It's very emotionally powerful.
