Unfortunately, since my sister and I try to complete the pokedex as well as possible, I usually end up with the water and grass starters.
Why not just get every starter Pokemon?
New Game: Choose Fire --> Trade
New Game: Choose Water --> Trade
New Game: Choose Grass --> Trade
New Game: Choose Fire --> Trade
New Game: Choose Water --> Trade
New Game: Choose Grass, then have your sister trade over the extra fire and water.
Or you can just breed, but you need to find a compatible Pokemon and it'll take some time.
I had Platinum & Soul Silver.
So I got all the starter Pokemon for SS, by trading over the Pokemon to Platinum --> Trading it back.
Yeah, that's what usually ends up happening. Ah well, this way I get to see how a better variety of pokemon work.
For the record, I think Empoleon is the best water starter there is. Swampert was pretty awesome, too, though.
I'm not sure which fire type starter is the best.
Torchic and Chimchar both eventually learn fighting type moves.
Charmander on the other hand, is fire and flying.
I've had the best luck with Typhlosion. It's pretty sturdy, and doesn't have the double weakness to Rock type moves. Blaziken I thought was better than Infernape but they're both pretty good. Charizard is awesome just because it's Charizard, though.
