It seems similar to DC, there is also a high school detective with a girl who he is friends with whose father is a detective like in Kogoro and Ran's case (even though Kogoro is a former policeman, not active any more).
I read some anime reviews where people said Japanese authors don't know how to write detective stories. Nonsense, in my opinion, there are too many series that really rock! Even apart Conan and Kindaichi, there is Tantei Gakuen Q, Karakuri Zoushi Ayatsuri Sakon, Kaze No Yojimbo (which may be kind of slow in the beginnig, but the final detective plot twist was amazing in my opinion).
I do not really think that there are any plans about there being a series. After all, seeing as how 3-4 chapter cases in Detective Conan are adapted into one single episode, I am not too sure how they would handle cases like Q.E.D., where cases go into about 100 pages each one.
As for detective stories from Japanese authors being bad, I cannot really tell if that is the truth, but Detective Conan, Q.E.D., C.M.B., and Tantei Gakuen Q all have their share of horrible cases.
