Stephen Moffat is currently the showrunner for Doctor Who and one of the writers for Sherlock. JJ Abrahms did indeed write the new Star Trek movies. My problems with the former involve going from writing some of the best individual episodes of Doctor Who to writing one of the worst seasons, including some of the most poorly-written characters I've seen outside of Twilight. My problems with JJ Abrahms can be summed up by the fact that he cut Benedict Cumberbatch's shower scene in Into Darkness for being "unnecessary", while considering it essential to have Alice Eve turn up in her underwear for no reason other than Zoe Saldana was in her underwear in the previous movie and apparently you can't get a single person to see a movie without women in their underwear. Dude, if you're going to be an asshole who's going to treat his characters like sex props instead of characters, as least acknowledge the existence of heterosexual women and gay men. We like Star Trek too. (Don't even get me started on how I feel about his treatment of Christine Chapel. I have so much rage concerning that it's not even funny.)

Gene Rodeneberry got a shitton of BS for putting minorities and women in his central cast. He did it anyway because hype the haters, he wanted everybody in his shows and movies to be treated like human beings. It's not an issue that JJ Abrahms fought to treat the female characters in the movie with a little more dignity; it's that he openly and exultantly declared that they were as important as their underwear scenes. Christine Chapel, a well-developed character who was on the cast longer than Chekhov and ran roughly equal to Uhura and Sulu for screentime, doesn't get anything at all because Abrahms openly doesn't give a shit after he's met his PC minimum of two named female characters. This isn't an issue of the studio forcing Abrahms writing something more lowbrow than what he wanted to write. It's about Abrahms writing sexist shit and being proud of it because he thinks it's improved upon the original.

I'm not saying that I don't enjoy the new movies, or that I think the casting is bad. It's just that the more of the original series I watched, the more irked I get with the way Abrahms wrote it. Even if I hadn't watched the original series, I'd still be pissed off with him for that interview where he "explained" Carol Marcus' utterly random, pointless underwear scene. It's just that if you're significantly more sexist than a TV show from the sixties... there's something wrong with you.
