It makes more sense imo to go from the smallest period of time to the largest though (although even the largest to the smallest would still make more sense than that weird way). Why the month(middle) to the day(smallest) then to the year(biggest)...? 2-1-3 instead of 1-2-3. It's confusing~ @_o.Callid wrote:XDKleene Onigiri wrote: There is no 21th month! D:

Re: Random Poll of Nine Days Ago! (884)
Actually, the largest-to-smallest (2012-11-23) format, also called big-endian, is the most logical ones, as it works similar to numbers themselves, and also similar to how time works (17:43, not 43:17). This format is also the international standard (with leading zeros). Little-endian (23.11.2012) is the second-most logical format, as it still has everything in order. The order just happens to be ascending instead of descending. Middle-endian (11/23/2012), however, doesn't make much sense at all. I often hear that it's useful in organizing stuff on a PC, and that might be an advantage over little-endian, but big-endian works even better at sorting stuff, because the years get sorted correctly, too! So, IMO, there are many reasons to use big-endian, some to use little-endian (mostly natural languages), but none to use middle-endian.Stopwatch wrote: It makes more sense imo to go from the smallest period of time to the largest though (although even the largest to the smallest would still make more sense than that weird way). Also, I strongly suggest to not use the / divisor for anything but middle-endian, and never use any other divisor for middle-endian. Oh, and write the year as four digits, so noone can confuse little- and big-endian.
9/11/(20)01 = 2001-09-11 = 11-09-2001 (= 11.9.2001)
(The dots are in brackets because they are, while unambiguous, a rather German standard

Then I guess it's a good thing that's a standard for you over there.Callid wrote: Also, I strongly suggest to not use the / divisor for anything but middle-endian, and never use any other divisor for middle-endian. Oh, and write the year as four digits, so noone can confuse little- and big-endian.
Doesn't mean other people should change their habits to fit your standards though.

"Middle-endian" is primarily used so that written notation matches spoken notation, afaik. People say "December 21st, 2012" much more frequently than "The 21st of December, 2012" or "In the year 2012, on December 21st".

Actually, their own standards as well. ISO 8601 is international, and therefore should be used for all international affairs (like the forum) at least. If you Americans write among yourselves, feel free to write however you want, but unless you are in some special restricted section, the internet is international and therefore the international format should be used.PhoenixTears wrote:Then I guess it's a good thing that's a standard for you over there.Callid wrote: Also, I strongly suggest to not use the / divisor for anything but middle-endian, and never use any other divisor for middle-endian. If you write in Sorbian, however, you can use the traditional format without any issues, because all Sorbian natives use the same format, and anyone who actually learns that language will therefore know that a date within a Sorbian paragraph is in the Sorbian format. This also applies to German, while as German has two formats (YYYY-MM-DD and DD.MM.YYYY), they cannot be confused with one another. In English, however, all three formats are used, and there is no valid convention as when to use which separator. Therefore, unless one is introduced - for example, the one I suggested - one has to strictly adhere to the international format, or otherwise face confusion and ridicule. After all, the Japanese date format is also a valid one, but I suppose å¹³æˆ

Re: Random Poll of Nine Days Ago! (884)
^This. The only version I hear spoken regularly outside of DD-MM-YY is stuff like "Friday, 23rd November", but days are a different thing anyway :x. It seems more likely the spoken "November the 23rd" thing came about because of the written thing over there instead...?They do?
(I'd noticed the hours-minutes-seconds thing, but I'd not really seen the YY-MM-DD before so~ :x. Interesting to know it is used in some places
The reason the "of" is missed out is probably due to the fact that when it's written down the "of" is left out for some stupid reason, to make it shorter I'd guess. When we first had to copy down the date without the "of" in year 3 I did actually ask *why* but I don't remember the answer for some reason

Obviously, it's because there are too many idiots here in the US who wouldn't even be able to write the date if it didn't follow the way it was spoken.Akonyl wrote: "Middle-endian" is primarily used so that written notation matches spoken notation, afaik. And yet again, here you are making comments about how people should run their forums. Hey, I've got a crazy idea! If you want things to be done your way so much, go start your own forum, with your own rules, and your own freaking date set-up.Callid wrote: Actually, their own standards as well. Stop trying to tell other people how things "should" be done.
