Also, actually it's good for water quality. You need some surface for the bacteria to grow on. Those are important to break down the nitrogen compounds your fish produce into fertilizer for the plants. I'm sure you can find some kind of plant that isn't eaten by the fish. Getting the fish tank into an equilibrium between fish and plants makes the whole thing much easier to care for - you won't have to change water as often, for example. (Also, it's a lot of fun to get it running properly, in my opinion ^^)
