Random Poll of the Day! (805)

If you have some randomness to share that you can't post elsewhere, this is the place to do it.

Do you mind religious words/symbols/implications in fiction?

First option, but only as long as that stuff isn't used for the sake of negative stereotypes

Obviously exceptions will be exceptions, but I certainly fall into the first option.

Depends on the reason behind them sometimes, but I guess 1 in the majority of cases...

it's fine most of the time. The only time I ever take issue with them (though it's more annoyance) is when they're used as a blatant "symbol grab" where there isn't much substance but they wanna make you think there is because they put together a lot of related names (JRPGs are pretty guilty of this a lot of times). But that isn't an issue with the symbol itself, just the person/company who's using em.

I don't have any issues with them.

Yes :-X

Between a book I read about a year ago that went from being just "main character is somewhat religious" to more or less preaching at the reader, and the fact that my favorite author is suddenly using lots of religious stuff in her newest books.... :-\ I'm actually pretty uncomfortable with it.

PT's post made me realize another thing

although it's clearly a nonissue to me now, I always hated religious symbols in literature during school, because you would have to recognize and analyze them and it was sorta expected that you had enough of a religious background to do so. I, on the other hand, would just be sitting there like "So the sun looked like a wafer... I have no clue what's special about a wafer."

I don't find it bothersome at all.  Well, let me clarify:  it doesn't bother so long as it makes sense in the context of the world within the book.

Normally not.
But when the story reads like "You are going to hell if you don't pray to my god", it is more than just jarring.

For me every literature during school was annoying because of all that analyzing. The teacher didn't make it better, because just his/her opinion was right of course @_@

Depends. If it is a fictional religion (as common in Fantasy), then no, as these religions are also commonly based on objectively real-in-story gods anyway :P
If it alludes to a real religion, I usually do mind, though. I have a rather Nordic position on that matter :P
If  ;), :D, ;D, ::), :P, :-X, :o or >:D are attached, that paragraph may not be 100% serious. Seriously.
