Well, the hero gets most of the crap, he has most of the work to do, and there's a chance he'd sacrifice himself at the end and die.
Still, he gets all the glory and is more remembered than the protagonist.

So......I'll think about it for a while.

If they're divided, I'd definitely be the protagonist. The character that aren't the hero often tend to be more interesting than the one that is, and very occasionally you get good stories about protagonists who aren't heroes, like Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead or Scott Westerfield's Extras.
