I always wonder why the heck Kaito even has such a phobia.

For funsies is the only reason I can think of. It depends on when he developed the phobia; if he developed it as a child, it could be anything between fish being tangentially related to a minor upset to a fish directly causing or being part of a major trauma. Aoko didn't know about the phobia, however, so either it's a recent thing or he's hidden it very carefully. Given the strength of his reaction and the odds of randomly coming across fish in daily life- at the market, passing a pet store, those fish flags that fly on some Japanese holidays- it seems difficult to hide. So it could be recent, but it would have to be a pretty significant trauma. A story about it would be cool, but I doubt Aoyama has one, since it seems to be a character trait inserted purely for teh lulz.

I once had a lot of fun writing a crackfic that crossed over MK with Ranma. If you know where Ranma's cat phobia comes from, you can probably take a wild flying guess at my crack theory of the origin of Kaito's ichthyophobia XD
