Does anybody have further details? Like, is it of the first chapter where he becomes Kid, is it of where Hakuba or Akako turns up, where Snake turns up and reveals that there IS plot to this bizarre but awesome manga, what?

that would be suicide for Kid to compete with a consistently top 10 ratings anime

Not going to beat Sazae-chan, ever. Chibi Maruko-chan and One Piece are also consistently huge ratings grabbers. That leaves 2 spots for top 5. Dragon Ball Kai and Crayon Shin-chan grab those two spots.

On the positive side, Conan almost beat Doraemon a couple of weeks ago?

I mean the idea of Conan actually having an ending would be significant enough that it could beat a couple of the shows that get better ratings than Conan.

Well, Dragon Ball Kai will be done in just over a year (ep47 airs tomorrow, 100 episodes likely in all), so that's definitely one less competitor.
