I think (this is just my personal opinion) that Aoyama sensei actually did that on purpose. Maybe not as a reference, but just for fun and to see what sort of reactions he could get. Sure got a good reaction from me...

He might have intended for something similar in things like reusing Tropical Land ("Hey! Aoko and Kaito had a date there!") and in one case, there were two gangs of street racers- one called "Black Star", a reference to the first DC case where Kid appeared, and their rivals "Red Comet", most likely a reference to Pandora's comet.
