@Incomplete-tantei: yes, the original text doesn't use gender pronouns but if we aplly the codenames rule of the BO then Rum HAS to be a man because Rum is a hard alcohol like Gin or Vodka.

Then, is Bourbon a strong alcohol? I was told it wasn't one.

Also, is it Gosho who said that strong alcohol were for men and light ones for female BO agents ?

Aoyama: As for the members, like Gin or Vodka, their names must be some type of alcohol. But, I'm running low on different types. They're all distilled alcohols. And the girls, like Sherry and Vermouth, are named after sweet alcohols. (As for why) I just think it sounds cool."

Rum happens to be a distilled alcohol made from sugarcane.

@Chekov MacGuffin: thanks for the confirmation. I was sure I'd read it somewhere but couldn't find it on the wiki. Guess next time I'll have to dig up the "translating interviews" thread over at DCW.

Though it is worth to add that it is what "we" know, but not what "Conan" knows.

Ok thanks for clearing up. I'm pretty sure it's not the first time I read this question/answer from this interview but well, I just wanted to have a firm confirmation that the "distilled alcohols -> guys / sweet alcohols -> women" was really from Gosho.

@geetp007: Gosho limits the type of questions they can ask of him in interviews and, then again, he can't reveal much in interviews because it'd take away the grace of the reveal in the manga. There recently was a chance to send him some questions but we're pending the answers.

Most of the time, though, he replies in a neutral manner so as to keep the speculation ongoing: other times he has added some details (like the rules of how the BO members are named).

So even if he we asked Gosho who Rum is he'd reply "I can't say".

I never answered this part of your question before, but bourbon is a type of whiskey. It has to be bottled at 40% ABV minimum, and can run up to 80% ABV. In comparison, most vodka sold is ~40 ABV.

I was looking up acronyms for RUM and found a few interesting ones

Resource and Unit Monitoring

Resident Unit Manager

Regional User Meeting

Resource Updating Manager (a type of software)

Regular Use Medicine (drugs)

Remington Ultra Magnum (ammunition)

Personally I think one of the first two sound fitting of what we have had as a description of RUMs job within the structure of the BO so far.
I hope that I can find someway to contribute to the community even if it's just random crack theories and looking things up for people who can't find the information they need.

@kimmy_kud0_tv2: in the scriptwriter case Haibara called RUM "Rum" without the capitals so it's possible that his name isn't necessarily always spelled in capitals or is a group of initials meaning something. The capitals might've been because Kir wrote the message in a rush and activated the cap locks without intending to.

I fully doubt that was gosho's intentions, as realistic as it may sound, and what haibara was referring to when saying that name was the alcohole, since she wouldn't know if it was meant to be an abbreviation(she herself doesn't know much about RUM) whereas Kir, who's still in the BO and might know more about RUM than haibara, intentionally wrote it in capital letters. IMO, it stands for something, so well done @kimmy_kud0_tv2 on finding these likely standings! :)

Pretty sure Fuji pointed out that in one of the files of that case, when Haibara refers to Rum, in her speech bubble it had "RUM", which is why people give it significance.

@Kor: but I saw the RAW file and it wasn't written in capitals on the RAW file. She pronounced it as if it was a normal name. Both in the 1st and 3rd file of that case. I think Fuji might've decided to put it on caps to refer to previous files but it wasn't written in capitals or Alphabet in the raw to begin with.
Spoiler:
The same happens in the recent Kamaitachi case when Conan thinks that Yamato has some aspects that match the rumored descriptions of Rum. Conan thinks of the guy as "Rum" and not "RUM".
So my point stands that it isn't necessarily a long named summed up in 3 letters.
