Or maybe because we take the chef too seriously.

@moonraven... me too, i read the fan translation and my reaction is meh..

Somehow gosho tried to make us think that RUM has something like eyepatch or have a scar in his/her eye. but it will be hard for him to show himself in public with that condition, right?

I agree. If RUM had an eyepatch they would say that and not simply that he's got an artificial eye.

This cook is yet another red herring in my opinion but we've only seen part of the file so I'd rather wait for the whole file to see his behavior.

It's not only the chef. It's the case in general. Lottery tickets! And assumedly
Spoiler:
Mouri&co are using that woman's lottery ticket to eat that sushi
I wasn't expecteing much of anything from this chapter and I seriously doubt that chef is to be even considered Rum suspect but for a reaosn or other I feel like this case hit the total rock bottom. I know this is only the first chapter of the case and I'm working on incomplete information... Oh well... Let's just say that I would've welcommed even DB case.

In terms of plot, I always welcome DB cases more than Kogoro/Heiji cases. Akai/Subaru appeared in a DB case. Rum's traits are introduced in a DB case. Ai/Mary similarity is introduced in a DB case. The death of Haneda Kohji also in a DB case. Wasaka Rumi first appeared in a DB case. And God knows anything else will be from a DB case.

@MoonRaven:
It's not lottery tickets. It's horse race betting tickets.
Spoiler:
Kogoro might've picked that woman's race 10,000 yen betting ticket that bet in one of the winning horses so the prize is 1 million yen.

Spoiler:
Well, this case either features Rum or a Rum suspect—since this is the Rum arc, I'd say that's pretty plot relevant.

If we could fly out of that window hand in hand, hover over this great city, gently remove the roofs, and and peep in at the queer things which are going on, the strange coincidences, the plannings, the cross-purposes, the wonderful chains of events, working through generations, and leading to the most outre results, it would make all fiction with its conventionalities and foreseen conclusions most stale and unprofitable.”

Well, I'm looking forward this cook detective, maybe he is interesting...
I take this back. I'm going again with the "Really?! Come on!!" thought.
Spoiler:
The design of the character is pretty strange... I don't believe he would appear in many more chapters, because I think drawing him must be quite tricky. To many facial features.

But, in the other hand, why, if he isn't a Rum suspect, would Gosho draw that eye patch? And, of course, there is the fact that the restaurant is very near to the detective agency. Being a chef there, could be the same as Amuro being a waiter at the Poirot: a chance to spy Kogoro (and/or Conan).
So... I don't know what to think anymore, I'll wait.

Then Fusae would be Vermouth?

Spoiler:
I like this case for its nostalgically simple constellation. It displays Kogorou’s foolishness in a way that has become rare over the course of the series, and even if there is no murder, just seeing Conan, Ran and Kogorou going to a place where some incident happens is a nice change after a long time. Not to mention that Kogorou gaining more attention is always welcome.

DCUniverseAficionado: IF Billy turnes out to acctyally be Rum I think that Fusae wouldn't be involved. But I just pointed out that he was on my LIST of suspects, :-P

Well, he's not on my list, hence why I asked for clarification on a character very much connected to him—Vermouth being Fusae is a theory I've heard thrown around.

And what about him seeing Shiho/Ai and Shinichi/Conan?
