Discussion thread: Detective Conan 969-971

Here's 18-year old Shukichi (File 900 and File 946) and the boy with Mary from File 969:



We have no idea how tall the boy from File 969 is, in comparison to 7-year-old Shinichi and Ran, but he looks shorter than an adult-sized Mary, his shoulders look really slim, and his hair doesn't part like Shukichi's, though his hair is pretty close to Shukichi's. Even the words the boy speak don't sound like something 18-year-old Shukichi would say.

At this point, here are some options:

[*]The boy is Shukichi.

[*]The boy is the middle brother (not Shukichi), making his debut in this case (and perhaps the next one, even more so), and Shukichi is just a shogi player who Mary and Shuichi/Subaru are fans of.

[*]The boy is not the middle brother (either Shukichi or a new character) but a person who will only appear during this flashback.

The marriage registration form from 947, though, seems to be the strongest indicator that Shukichi is the middle brother—it is very unlikely Shukichi would happen to have a father with the surname "Akai" and a mother with the surname of "Sera," and not be Mary's son and Shuichi's and Masumi's brother.

Thus, I'm behind either the first option, or the third option.

The boy may never have stood in front of Mary, like he is, in that one panel—Shinichi's/Conan's internal monologue just had them together because he already recognizes Shuichi, but Mary and the boy are people he doesn't recognize yet. Maybe the boy and Mary were never together and never met, and each of their words were from interactions Shinichi/Conan had with them, each, separately. We lack the context that the next case (in all probability, the next case will be the Golden Apple of the Rum arc, as this case is the Chinatown Déjà Vu in the Rain) will eventually provide.

I don't know why, but the panel the farthest to the right almost looks like it could be a young Takagi Wataru. He is only aprox 26 (according to DCW).

This is a common thing that Gosho does. When he draws mysterious/forgotten/serious-mode characters, he tends to deviate from their natural hair style in order to draw their hair long enough so that it can cover their eyes.

Also when you look at the 2nd and 3rd pic Shukichis shoulders do look similar to that "kid."

Oh, only the the second time. So 969 is still in a class of it's own, alongside 339, through 339 is all symbols, so it's probably the most unique DC file title (unless, of course, you'd like to point one out more unique than "OX△□").

This is a common thing that Gosho does. When he draws mysterious/forgotten/serious-mode characters, he tends to deviate from their natural hair style in order to draw their hair long enough so that it can cover their eyes.

Spoiler:

The boy, in all probability, is Shukichi, and both the perspective and Gosho drawing his hair that way for an eye-covering, mysterious look, make him look like another, younger, character. Nevertheless, I'm still prepared for this character to turn out to be someone new.

Ah, don't mind my self-recrimination—it may come easily to me, but it's by no means all-consuming.

Upon reflection, I'd say there's a chance the boy and Mary were standing together like Shinichi/Conan imagined/remembered—after all, Mary's words seem to be a follow-up to the boy's:

Boy: "It’s scary… like being possesed by something…"
Mary: "Posessed by a Shinigami…"

I'd say that even if the boy isn't Shukichi, Shukichi is still the Akai family middle brother.
