Charles comes from the German(ic) Karl, which is derived from a word meaning ‘man’. You then have several local variations like Carlo and Carlos specially in Italy, Portugal and Spain, the original Karl specially in Germany and neighborhood, and Charles as both the English and the French version. (Of course, there are many other variants, including female forms like Carla and Charlotte.)

I’m still irritated by this mixed pronunciation, though. While しゃるる and シャルル speak for French roots, the English pronunciations えいべる and エイベル suggest to me that Aoyama or an assistent of his didn’t do proper research. Or this combination is intended, and Charles Abel has multiple origins (or pretentious parents?).

This name doesn’t seem kosher, but in the end, that’s probably not too relevant.

“Life is infinitely stranger than anything which the mind of man could invent. We would not dare to conceive the things which are really mere commonplaces of existence. If we could fly out of that window hand in hand, hover over this great city, gently remove the roofs, and and peep in at the queer things which are going on, the strange coincidences, the plannings, the cross-purposes, the wonderful chains of events, working through generations, and leading to the most outre results, it would make all fiction with its conventionalities and foreseen conclusions most stale and unprofitable.”

When you look at Heiji's and Conan's hands it almost looks like they both look from the same tree...

It's interesting how English fans talk about other languages' pronounciations writing words differently to reproduce phonetics (I'm Italian).
If Charles Abel actually is French, then he could mean "nuè", "denuded", indicating that somebody (the historian) took the gold from the place he understood it was hidden and maybe the historian himself attempted to kill him with the slide, maybe he let the miner die, with the purpose to keep the gold. The reporter (probably the miner's son) discovered that and revenged his father.

@Shihceiji: hum. I see. That could be the case but then again we still lack enough data to figure out if he had time to slip outside and kill the historian. Guess we'll know more when the text spoilers on Saturday.

I wonder if there was no footprint of the monster, because conan only spotted the blood, maybe the trick is something like flying device, or something like catapult.

First the culprit tie a rope to a tree (decorate it like monster) and pull it untill close to the building, after that attach something to the tree that would grab the signboard. Tie a rope to the signboard but make it loose so the signboard would be thrown away. Release the rope, the signboard is thrown away and the tree is back to its position . Finally thy monster is gone.... Oh the tail of the monster that conan and co looked is a rope that had been pulled by force of the returning tree. As for the size of signboard, maybe if bigger it would fall not too far away.

So that was something i can think of for now with little information that we had. Well... i have used the moving tree trick when i was child to scare my friends too. Ahh what a good memory.... Ha ha ha. Still... there is too much hole in my theory.

Sorry if my explanation isn't clear enough. I forgot all the grammar lesson that i learned in high school and uni... :p ha ha ha

In my opinion the rapid succession of scenes from the message for the historian to Kazuha and Ran's room is deceiving. Heiji and conan should have been in their room(s) before, I guess and the impression that all happened in a few minutes is due to the lack of pages (also because one of them is focused on the beast).
For explaining the apparition, I suppose the reporter prepared a black sheet outside and a projector which light was hibìdden by fire. With a video of the graphically modified Golden Retriever biting a sprinkled by food signboard, he could pull on the sheet in his room before Conan and Heiji saw it and as the fire was extinguished the video already finished.

Is Gosho forced to make only 16 pages currently?!
In the old volumes, he exceeded 16 pages sometimes, but now he doesn't.

@iiRoYal: haven't seen him write more than 16 pages in many, many years. I guess the times he exceeded those was when he felt that what he wanted to tell in 1 chapter didn't fit in 16 pages.

I don't know when the switch from 18 pages to 16 pages was exactly, but it has been 16 page chapters for a very long time now.

In the old volumes the panels and dialogue boxes took alot more space than now. He just condensed the chapters to 16 most likely because 48 pages is enough for a short story (would be like a one-shot of monthly chapter).

200s were still 18 page chapters.

Yeah, like I said, those were 18 page chapters. But then again, back then the panels were most of the times bigger and there were more space consuming action shots to show movement, so condensing that down two pages didn't take much away I feel. I don't think chapters were ever longer than 18 pages, aside from occasional 19 page chapters when Gosho had a two page color spread for the cover of the chapter and aside from the first chapter.

The page number limit is probably set by Shounen Sunday, not the author's needs. The transition from more to fewer pages is either an attempt to add more manga chapters per SS release (for advertising) without increasing the pages or reduce manufacturing costs by printing fewer pages per release. Zettai Karen Children, another long running SS manga, dropped from 18+cover to 16+cover pages as well.
