The "understand" thing is a misinterpretation. The actual word is "change".

"That kid is(was) a handsome man."
You are right about the pun of Sonoko and "that kid", but since it's "man", it couldn't be Sonoko. This should be talking about little Shinichi in the coming Shinichi and Ran flashback case.

It's probably referring to her 'tude. Especially when she rescues Ran's badge from the bully in this chapter.

I think it could be considered pun. AC spoiler was obviously using the pun of "that kid" and Sonoko, then Sherry's soliloquy "picked" Sonoko. If he originally intended to be clear about Sonoko in AC, I think katakana rather than hiragana would be more proper in the case, based on Gosho's writing style in AC, which uses katakana for people's names mostly. Not so sure though.
Yes, I think it talks about little Sonoko behaving manly fighting for Ran's badge.
