Rant time.
Positives were mostly what ranger said (OKIYA SUBARU'S POINTLESS CAMEOS EPISODE 18). But, at least the music was good too and the first 5 minutes were fine. I'm glad to see more Kobayashi and Shiratori no matter how questionable their relationship plot is. So that's 15 minutes, ignoring the ED, of...this. And it's a one episode case in 2011 so it was essentially filler. In the manga it was a short case between the Demon Dog and London case, so it really was almost meant to be a silly pointless case. So this isn't like the worst thing ever or a disaster or anything. In fact, this is the 2nd of some of my favorite manga/anime series to have lame, short stories involving love interests for minor characters that no one asked for (School Rumble).
That being said, it's still a big problem. Not a big problem that will ruin the series for many or anything like that, this isn't Hueco Mundo. But it's such an obvious example of the problems in this series.
First of all, Chiba. Was anyone remotely interested (outside of for the lulz) in Chiba's love life? Was anyone asking for this? Does anyone care? Even in a series as popular (in Japan) as this, does anyone care about Chiba? That's arguable I guess, but the rest of the questions almost have to be a definitive "no". I don't think this would appeal to the target audience of young boys, not to detective fans as there wasn't too much to it and it had problems that would be worth discussion if it was any other case, not to fans of the plot (oh I'll get to that), and as shallow as this may sound, I doubt many people interested in the romance cares too much about the fat minor character, especially if they're female. So, who was this made for? ...I don't know.
2nd, this was a bad story. There seems to be less and less depth to the love stories lately and instead pratically just being "ZOMG DESTINY AND TRUE LOVE" and nothing else. And the childhood love stories used to be just a PART of the stories. Sure Shinichi and Ran used it before, but those had more interesting stories with them so it was easily forgiveable. Kazuha and Heiji and Eri and Kogoro had it mentioned in one case to be used for the story of that case, and then basically never again. Shiratori and Kobayashi could have been as bad, but at least there was that case that had some humor with it with a cool story that added a bit of drama to it. There was NOTHING worthwhile here, nothing that makes me get invested in either character at all or makes me want to see more of them. There was little to it and what was there was typical, predictable and boring.
3rd, this is the only story you could come up with for Chiba? There are so many stories you can make up, and you have all the time in the world, which you should be thankful for as almost no other series gets all this time to expand on things. And you come up with something so uninteresting and so predictable from you that it was a joke before anyone read it. A joke. Not comedic, just a joke. Not even it being a romance story made it a joke, maybe not even childhood friendship romance. You could have made a better story and almost anything would have been preferred to what was done with Chiba and this story. You are better than this Gosho. You have far too much talent to be making crap like this.
And finally, think of all the better stories that could be done. That have been done, that hopefully will be done. And any of the other relationship plots would be more interesting. Or just another murder case. Of course, you can probably guess the main reason I hate this. It's simple really. The logic has been something like:
"You know a high school genius being turned into a child? That's boring. Chasing a huge criminal organization filled with menacing villians? Lame. Characters people are invested in? No one could like that. Constant murders to be solved in order for Conan to somehow defeat an impossibly secret and strong organization with the help of the FBI among others so he can get back to the girl he loves? Drama? Interest? Character? Suspense? Mystery? Who cares? WE NEED TO SEE WHAT THE FAT MINOR CHARACTER WAS DOING IN MIDDLE SCHOOL!"
