I think Camel living some half-life would be far more depressing. But why would Gosho make the ending sad? Like, this whole time it's been just fine, not really sad at all. I think it wouldn't just feel out of place if all the sudden it was a tragedy, I think it would be totally fake. I don't think he'd do that to use.
The april fool's joke is making it hard for me to figure out who you are talking about. ^^; I'm trying to use my own entry as reference but it's not easy.
Let's try a test.
Shinichi - S H I N I C H I
Haibara- H A I B A R A
Conan- C O N A N
Ayumi- A Y U M I
There we go. Reference.
I never thought that Conan and Haibara
should be together. Just that I'm not averse to them being together. I'm more of the opinion that it's impossible. Sort of like Ayumi with Conan. Just wouldn't happen. Ever.
Well how would that be any different if Shinichi settled for Haibara? You really think he wouldn't be living a half life then? If you lose someone that you care about, especially if they died violently- there's no real recovery from that. Maybe someday he'd return for Haibara but I don't think Haibara would take him under those circumstances. She'd feel guilty. And Ran's death would hang over them both. It wouldn't be healthy. Shinichi remaining a bachelor for the rest of his days is no sadder than him settling for Haibara. I think there would be happy days. He wouldn't be completely broken, (at least I would hope not). But I don't think their relationship could be long and healthy under the circumstances preceding their union.
Probably why I speak so strongly against this is because I did have a friend in a relationship with someone who lost a girlfriend in a violent way. Honest to god truth, his girlfriend died in a terrible car accident and he never forgot it. However he tried to carry on. He started dating a friend of mine though we eventually realized that he approached her because she "resembled" the girlfriend that he lost. This dead girlfriend constantly hung over their relationship. He was always comparing her to the one he lost. And eventually she had to break up with him.
Shinichi is so attached to Ran that I couldn't see him ever moving on after her death. At least not romantically. It's sad, for sure. But I think it's more true to his character.
However if Shinichi some day came to the realization that he would never get the cure. And Ran simply moved on (or maybe he asked her to). And then Shinichi noticed Haibara who had been by his side all the time- that would be far more acceptable to me. But he has to return her feelings and not just because he's got nothing left to lose.
