Re: Detective Conan anime: what happened to the soundtrack and the drawings?

Postby Wakarimashita » March 9th, 2011, 4:13 pm

-Shiratori's voice actor died in 2000. So his voice actor was changed. Some minor characters (like Detective Toriyama) also have different voices.
-There have been 3 phases in Conan animation : from the beginning to the late 200s, traditional cell animation was used, they started using computers to animate the anime near the NY case, that's also when a new animation director came in. Then, at the beginning of the 500s (after the clash of red and black), that animation director left which explains why we went from round faces to more sharp angles (note that HD episodes began with episode 453).
-Indeed, the soundtrack was remixed and new pieces were added. Most, if not all, people on this forum regret it.

I don't mind the new soundtrack that much. The old tracks are on average higher quality, but there are several excellent new tracks and, more importantly, a series that is around for 10+ years needs to mix things up to remain fresh. It is easy to celebrate the idyllic past of the soundtrack, but I think people tend to exaggerate the greatness of the old and the lack of quality of the new.

As for the visuals, looking at it purely from a personal aesthetic standpoint, rather than the objective technical one used above the quality of the animation maybe a huge leap from around 90-120 and remained pretty similar throughout the 100s, getting slightly better. Then in the mid 200s, the quality increased very sharply, though at the expense of some amount of liveliness. Then, in the mid 300s (after 345), the looked changed quite significantly in a way that I can't describe well- the best I can say that the lines became less defined and the colors somewhat more washed out, though that doesn't really get across what I mean. The quality then increased at a steady rate, until 504. Then there is the awful recent animation. I like to caution against idealizing what is old, but the new style is just ugh.

Detective Movies Contest 2013: Information Thread  Current Faceoff

"The energies of our system will decay; the glory of the sun will be dimmed, and the earth, tideless and inert, will no longer tolerate the race which has for a moment disturbed its solitude. Man will go down into the pit, and all his thoughts will perish. The uneasy consciousness, which in this obscure corner has for a brief space broken the contented silence of the universe, will be at rest. Matter will know itself no longer. 'Imperishable monuments' and 'immortal deeds,' death itself, and love stronger than death, will be as though they had never been."

Probably the best way to put it. The quality of it is arguable at times but my complaints for that vanished once I heard what they tried (and seemingly have failed) to replace it with. They started using it in the beginning of 2007 with episode 460. By the 400s the soundtrack seemed almost out of place with the newer art and I'm fairly certain that's why it was done.

The best comparison would be music in video game remakes I think.

I started reading it at the end of January, so I've read many years of files in just a month and a half.  :o
It's funny because I thought it would take too long (and that I didn't have the time), but I just cannot stop reading! :P
i have told you that you will like it....

Yeah, I prefer the old soundtracks over the newer remixed versions. And on a completely different note which sort of relates to this, when exactly did Takagi's design change? I tried to keep track, but I lost it around the early 300's and then before I knew it, his design changed.

+ The new soundtrack style is more appealing to ear and now you can focus more on the story not the soundtrack. It's nearly 15 years. There must be changes.

- It sounds less organic now. First soundtracks gave me the feeling of listening jazz music in live. New tracks sound like more synth or only demos programmed with a computer.

+ I love the current animation style. It looks like the graphics from a visual novel. The current animation style also truly keeps the Gosho-san's current drawing style.

+The coloring is better. Pure black colors are gone.

- The old animation was more fluent, today it's not.

- Sometimes i think they even over-abandoned the black color. The colors that supposed to be black are too light now.

Yes, yes and yes ! The black is almost blue now. I prefered the pitch black we had in cases like the Old Castle Investigation Case !

Indeed it is. I do miss the old style and the pure pitch black colors, it had such a nice feel to it.

Yeah... it put a somewhat classy feel to it, along with the music.

The current color is actually the color Gosho intended. The same goes for Gin's silver hair.

Ah, that explains everything.

Besides for Gin. I already knew about the Gin thing. I actually think I've heard once that Gin means 'silver' in Japanese.

Ah, didn't know that. That's good to know. And yeah, gin is Japanese for silver. There was a reference to that in movie 5.

I wonder how many people thought Gin's hair color change was a plot point. :p

I was one of them.
