In Detective Conan, it is basically always murder, not suicide.

Japan has a far higher suicide rate but much lower murder rate than America.

...and Kogoro and the police a decent amount of time assume it is suicide and the ONLY reason it isn't considered suicide for long is because Conan's around...and Conan takes place in a real modern day Japan setting...

Conan and Kindaichi, along with Sherlock Holmes (UK), Bao Gong (China) and the likes are in the mystery genre. People expect them to contain murder cases, regardless of where it takes place. They're still fiction, not real.
And let's face it -- a murder is much more interesting than a suicide or kidnapping or riddle-solving case

I took him to mean that without Conan around to solve the cases, they get labeled as suicides, and that is why there is a much higher suicide rate and lower murder rate.

Could just be that the Aoyama police expect suicide because that's usually the case outside of the Conan cases, hence all the "Kogoro/Conan is a jinx" talk (Megure has noticed enough "Conan NOT Kogoro" cases to wise up about who the likely jinx is, too, BTW). I doubt Aoyama is insinuating the real Japanese police are incompetent.

I'm taking Slider's post to be analytically neutral observation. Substitute "almost always" for "basically always" and it wouldn't even be mild hyperbole (and I think Slider meant something like "almost always", and clearly specified the suicide/murder ratio instead of the murder story/not murder story ratio, so there's nothing to complain about from my "Aoyama is actually a respectable mystery-romance-espionage writer who is well aware of the silly tropes of the genres" bias).

I didn't see slider as insinuating that Gosho is making fun of the police, but just this odd occurrence with "real" suicide/murder rates in japan matched by how in Conan, a lot of cases are suicides except Conan is there to tell the "one truth."

Now must see what slider really meant.
