The premise is easily proven fact. "Lazy continuity" is a dis of Aoyama of the TV Tropes sort you used to flame when you were actually somewhat cool. ProfParanoia is a "Ran shouldn't cry just because the guy who tells her to wait for him shuts her out of his life completely," basher.  Since no one in this thread even said tech progression had anything to do with continuity before ProfParanoia made the link, it's perfectly legitimate to wonder where the "as stated before" comes from. "IRC Ran bashing echo chamber" is just one guess, not *the* asserted answer. Could be from some other thread on this forum, TV Tropes, chatbox chat, etc... too.

Maybe it's actually an experiment from the BO.  You know that program they hired the one software dude to create?  That was an improvement, or hint.  In reality Shinchi is in a VR.  What he considers a day/week is really perhap seconds.  They are testing his detective abilities, because really, how many killers use that much creativity and planning in their murder?  In the end, you will find out, it was all an illusion, and BO will carry out their fiendish plot.

As crazy as it is, no matter how many Christmas/Valentine's/Beach episodes we see, it all takes place within a year.

We've actually only seen Christmas and Valentine's once each in the manga.  No holiday has repeated.  For the beach, just assume they make the most of their summer vacations.

Like GinRei said. You can't take beach or winter cases to check what "time" it is in DC. Since they are in Japan and it has Boreal climate, Warm temperate climate and Subtropical climate (if I googled the names right XD).
So "device" wise and non-main-plot wise, it's the current time. But plot wise, so, how long shinichi is shrunk, it's not even over a year now. Goshos time got screwed up in DC because he didn't assume it would last so long.
