DETECTIVE CONAN'S STATUS IN JAPAN

Postby EdogawaConanTantei » March 7th, 2008, 11:10 am

.. Ok.. so Conan is either very close to surpassing or has already surpassed Dragon Ball as the longest running anime EVER(That's DB thru DBGT  ;D)

I live in New York.. I've never been to Japan.. I'm not even Japanese.

I started watching Conan on Adult Swim(like, how I've read, more than you than I would of thought also have) and I've shunned them ever since for taking it off.

I'm not sure the exact years that they were showing it.. but there was probably a good year between the final time I saw it on Adult Swim and the next time I watched it.. on DVD  :P

However.. more to the point.. straight up.. Do CHILDREN in Japan watch DC? If so.. exactly how young are we talking here? I'm guessing like the 10-14 year old range maybe.. but even so.. it's still such a violent show.. though it goes hard on the point of showing that crime does not pay..

P.S.
I'm guessing that within Japan, this show is not just watched by the 18-23 age demographic?

The Dragonball trilogy is DEFINITELY not the longest running anime in Japan. Doraemon has aired 1095 episodes since 1979.  I'm not 100% sure if this is the longest, but I'd bet it is.

Conan is certainly geared towards children (that's why you see furigana over the kanji in the OP), but based off its 7:30 airtime I'd say it's meant to be a show for the whole family. Japan is definitely more relaxed when it comes to media for children. Ever heard of Crayon Shin-chan? That's a family anime in Japan as well :P

Sazae-san is the longest running anime. It has thousands of episodes, and has been running since 1969.

By the way, Conan has probably already surpassed the Dragonball franchise in first run TV air time given the number of hour+ specials Conan has had. Episode counts aren't the best way to compare length when an anime "episode" might be somewhere between 15 minutes to two and a half hours long...

The Conan manga is a shonen, like Dragonball, the primary intended audience being boys approaching adolescence and young teens. As a 7:30PM anime it's probably meant for a more general (both younger and older) audience. (It's certainly going to be interesting to see how the anime handles a certain head shot... the anime tends to tone down the bloodier scenes.)

You can judge for yourself the target audience based on the type of commercials that were aired during last week's show.  Keep in mind that the show airs on Monday nights at 7:30pm.

Georgia Emerald Mountain Blend Drink Commercial
DC Opening
DC for Nintendo DS Commercial
Another Game from Bandai Commercial
U-ka Saegusa in dB Single Commercial
Garnet Crow Album Commercial
Epson PM-A840 All-in-One Commercial
Epson E-520 Photo Printer Commercial
Show Begins
Liquid Laundry Detergent Commercial
Child's musical toy (that attaches to your fingers) Commercial
Dramatic Baseball Comic Commercial
McDonald's Happy Meal Toy Commercial
Show Ends

^ I guess it is considered a children's one... It's also a popular show for kids to watch in China.

The mere fact that a lot of the main characters are little kids (or look like one) should indicate that it's a show for kids. Some episodes are predictable and strange too, especially the ones with complicated tricks. Older people (teens-adults) would get bored after watching those episodes. It's a lot easier to be excited if one is watching a Black Org episode! Or a plot/character development one.

Still, I sometimes believe that some of the concepts on the show are too difficult for little kids to understand. Cyanide poisoning and depression of the freezing point of ice is a bit too complicated for primary kids ^^;

Eh? Obviously the toy and McDonalds commercials are kid targeted. However, unless Japan is really strange, children under 12 don't tend to be the ones buying printers for the household. Giza music is more for teens and young adults. The sponsor/ad list looks very much "all ages" to me.

Kids in japan watched Dragonball Z and way worse killing animes than Conan so yeah. DBZ people got exploded and blew up blood was leaking from their mouths and you actually saw stuff go through their stomach. Conan is way more mild than that. haha

Let me clarify the printer ads.

Epson PM-A840 All-in-One Commercial: shows what appears to be a teenage girl using the unit to produce decorations for her bedroom.

Epson E-520 Photo Printer Commercial: features a mom & her 2 primary school kids.

So, maybe DC is geared toward moms & young children. ;D

I saw raws with detergent/soap commercials about 2 years ago. Looked young adult targeted to me. Boys and big sisters is the way I described it back then.

Also consider that Conan could regularly get 17%-20% household ratings at the height of its popularity, so it'd be interesting to compare the ads it had back then with what it gets now during the twilight of its popularity. I've seen automobile manufacturers listed among the sponsors before, though I suppose those could have been ads for stuff like dirt bikes.

umm.. this means diddly considering commercials can change on a weekly basis. Unless I'm mistaken, and for the past ten years it's been printers, detergent and happy meals...

It is not who is sponsoring the show, it is the type of commercial.  Epson or McDonald's could have shown teenage boys or adult males in their ads if that was their target audience.  Though they most likely show different ads each week, the theme of the commercial is probably similar.

Is YTV a national TV or pay TV?
I've ever visited Japan (Wakayama), but i couldn't find it in TV, only a anime commercial of Conan
