DC Fansubbing 2006-2010: The Chart

Postby dilbertschalter » January 14th, 2011, 4:05 pm

This is something I've been thinking about doing for some time and decided do now because, why not. The idea is to visually graph the progress of DC subs in the last four and half years (the starting date isn't entirely abitrary- June 2006 was I started following the fansubbing scene and it was also right around the time (a little after to be precise) Kaizou started up). Without further ado:

Though the chart is ugly and poorly designed it is (I hope), not too difficult to read. The red line is the total number of Detective Conan episodes aired. At the beginning of June 2006, that number was 440, at the beginning of January 2011 (the final point) it was 601. The blue line is the number of episodes subbed. It started at around 200 and is now at 582 (unfortunately the numbers don't line up exactly at the end, but the difference is only four episodes, with the actual total being 586). The yellow line represents the gap; it is simply Episosides Aired-Episodes Subbed. Again, it is not 100% accurate, though the difference from the actual figure is. The numbers on the x-axis are the number of months that have passed since June 2006 and the numbers on the y-axis are episodes.

Man will go down into the pit, and all his thoughts will perish. The uneasy consciousness, which in this obscure corner has for a brief space broken the contented silence of the universe, will be at rest. Matter will know itself no longer. 'Imperishable monuments' and 'immortal deeds,' death itself, and love stronger than death, will be as though they had never been."

The fact that that blue line is about to meet that red line despite 30-40+ new episodes airing every year whilst we were making up that ridiculous deficit is...

It's something. :-*

600 episodes subbed in 7 years or so. If the releases had been linear, that means an episode would have been released every 4 days. The constancy is particularly impressive considering not only the amount of episode but also the amount of lines in each episode compared to other shows ( :-* Naruto & Co).

It's been a bit more than seven years. DCTP-I started in 2002 and while they didn't sub many episodes, there is also of course Anime-Conan starting in 2003 (a little less than eight years ago) Still, a pretty awesome pace, even more so because as you noted DC is dialogue heavy.

With A-Conan, KnKF, and Neg combined, we basically had 1-200 sorted out, so it was everything after that that really needed attention. In essence, we can say it took from 2006 to now to sub 201-600, so still no small feat. (This is all on top of investing a month in doing the movies annually, along with all the many OVAs and such)

The goal with the Kaizou releases, as the people around in 2006 may remember, was to stop playing around and catch up to Japan as far as the story was concerned--in that one summer. After we finally did catch up and after the DCTP merger, I decided early on that we absolutely had to make sure we did all the weekly episodes beginning as soon as possible (which started with Clash) so as to not create even more work to do in the future. This was actually a very difficult and stressful endeavor (and has remained so given that everyone has to be on their game not just when they feel like it but every single week), yet... I think it brought a stability to the Conan fansubbing scene that it had not seen in a very long time.

For sure, I was just nitpicking a little about dates- it's esay to forget how long there have groups subbing DC.

As for the issue of the story releases, I think it was pretty crucial from a community perspective (I don't know much about the internal politics), because it gave people something to follow. The idea that DC had an actual plot that was moving forward was somethat that I barely even realized before Kaizou (the earlier BO related episodes that I watched seemed more like changes of pace than anything else). Even though I never liked the story *that* much, I still kept following because I did want to know what happened. I don't think this was an uncommon experience, though people who followed the manga (I did not at the time) were already following the story.

That's easy, just sub an episode before it airs.    ;)

Actually, that wouldn't make it surpass it, because the red is all episodes, not all episodes aired in Japan, so really you'd have to sub and episode before it exist to have the red line surpass it. Which might involve time travel. Anyone know how to make 1.21 gigawatts?

Nice graph, this is good news for the completionists out there who simply can't skip an episode - i know a few people that were waiting on the 200s because if one episode not being subbed.  I used to be like, first for the dub and then for the sub, but then I decided to dive into the deepend.
