your dream anime company you would like to see do a proper D

Postby rpgplayer00 » December 1st, 2010, 8:41 pm

I will admit I first learned of Detective Conan watching the Funimation Dub of Detective Conan (Case Closed). I thought the dub was pretty good until I started watching the subtitled version.  I think where funimation struck out was when they tried to hard to "AMERICANIZE" the show. So any way what would be your ideal anime company you would like to see dub Detective Conan?  I have seen Sentai Filmworks do a lot of decent dubs as of late so I would cast my vote for them.

Funimation. But it's too late anyway.

Funitmation gave up on Americanizing Case Closed after it was token off of Adult Swim.

My spell checker actually allowed "Americanizing" I didn't think it was a actual word. O__O

Or Oceanview, depending on which episode you're watching.

Probably Sunrise/Bandai. Been putting out some quality dubs lately.

I don't have a problem with the character name changes, Jimmy, Rachel, Richard, Amy... etc are fine, and much easier on an English audience, but the location name changes are just stupid. Half of the show *is* Japanese culture, and I wonder where they would go when Shinichi has his New York trip... or where would Hawaii become...?

They gave up long before that.

And then they changed their minds and changed it back to Osaka!! I'm still scratching my head over that one.

Honestly, FUNimation nailed it with the later stuff. If it were up to me, I'd have FUNimation do it still, and I would keep most of the voice actors. However:

- I wouldn't start from the beginning. I'd start from where they left off, but I would have them keep the Japanese names, and then when they are much further into the series, I would have the cast re-dub the first 123 (130 in the dub) episodes with the Japanese names as well. The little things; that's all that they need to change.

- Heiji's home will be Osaka. Not Alberta, not Oceanview, not "Alberta... no, wait, Osaka!!" It will always be Osaka. The series in general will take place in Tokyo.

- Enough of the sloppy cuts and edits. For example, enough of the crap where the credit sequence is the same video recap in each episode. For example, in part 1 of the Ski Lodge Murder Case, the credits were the credits to part 2's episode, completely spoiling who the killer was. Nice job, guys. Give each episode their own credit video, like the original show did.

- Enough of the editing of actual CLUES so you can sneak in another joke. Seriously, more than once FUNimation's script writers would cut out a spot where there was a vital clue in place of a lame joke. The Luxury Sea Liner Murder Case immediately comes to mind. A clue or two was cut in exchange for a bad joke (IE. the "ninja's" line.) That's just ridiculous. Granted, the killer in that case was a dead giveaway when the bread crumb was discovered, but it's just a little lame when FUNimation feels it has to add lame comedy into every script it is given.

- This is totally superficial, but I would get rid of the terrible names they give episodes ("Jack Attacks!!" or "Licence to Die!!" The wit just writes itself, everyone) in exchange for their original titles.

- I didn't mind them dubbing the songs. I'm on both sides of the fence for that.

Can't really think of anything else, but those are my main points. Really, even with how they presented it originally, the dub wasn't one of the worst. If FUNi had promoted it properly, and not sat on unreleased episodes and movies for FOUR YEARS, maybe they wouldn't have had such a hard time finding the series a big audience. And heck, they DID have an audience for the series. It just wasn't the one they originally were looking for.

Most shojos and shonens, especially ones that came out in 90s, had poor Dubs because it was just reaching the international fanbase on a larger scale than ever before. So they tried to make it easy on the audience.

Now, tons of people watch anime. It's a familiar thing. And now that people got wind of the subs, the demand for dubs to keep to the original story is higher than it once was.

That's not really FUNimation's fault, though. They were given the footage like that. Other dubs throughout the planet did the same thing because that's literally *the only footage of the ED that TMS sent to companies outside Japan*.
The only thing FUNimation could do if they were *really* dedicated would be to buy the Japanese DVDs to see what the correct scenes are, and splice them in by themselves. And yeah... don't see ANY dubbing company doing that, really.

In my opinion I think funimation did a great job with the dub with what they had to work with and the rules they had to follow.

First of all this kinda of show has a hard time finding an audience in the US.  I remember back in the day when it was airing on Adult Swim how I heard that at first it was going to be aired on fox kids back when that block still existed.  One of my friends said she read something about that and then showed me a scan of what she had read.  "Case Closed" was at first planned to be more geared to a younger audience which is why it was so heavily Americanized.  But then fox kids turned into the fox box (or something I can't remember) and somewhere along the line they figured that having a kids show where a murder happens in almost every episode was a bad idea.  Before all that happened funimation had already recorded the first few episodes with the name changes and so on.

If I also recall I remember hearing that it was really the Japanese company that wanted the name changes NOT funimation.  I remember seeing something about the name changing being part of their licensing contract.  Don't take my word for it because I could be wrong.  I just remember reading that from somewhere ages ago.

There just might be something more going on behind the scenes that we don't know about at funimation as to why all these changes had to occur.  It could all really come down to what was in the license contract with the Japanese company.

i have no problem with americanization in subs or dubs in most cases, so yeah. don't have much of an opinion here.
